I have a Sony VW50 connected to a HTPC I downloaded some HD clips from the microsoft site (1080) they look fantastic! however when I connect my PS3 to the VW50 the picture (Night at the Museum and Black Hawk Down) don't really look that much better than a standard DVD!?!? not even close to the High Def clips

Is anyone else dissapointed with the picture from the PS3?

    Thanks

PS3 is a superb Blu-Ray player in my setup, easily on a par with the picture quality of my Toshiba XE1 HD-DVD player. I run both at 1080p.

Make sure your PS3 has (at least 1080i) selected in the display options. If you have 720p selected, then the player downscales to 480p on output for Blu-Ray discs.

If you can't see the quality, the problem lies in your set-up.

There is no conspiracy, no big secret, PS3 Blu-Ray really is very good indeed.

    Hey! I also own an XBOX360. :D

I spliced together (roughly) this image, with one side showing the PS3 set to output 1080p, and the other set to output 720p (but actually downscaling to 480p due to the PS3 firmware):

I used to own a HD-Drive for my 360 but sold it as I just didn't watch movies more than once. The picture quality on it was impressive, recently watched Casino Royale on the PS3 and I have to say the picture quality was on par with the HD-Drive.

But I'm wearily of most Blu-Ray movies as they are badly encoded.

    what a bizarre statement :boring:

i won't go into detail however quality oozes out of every orifice of the ps3

just for the record the Blu-Ray playback is simply stunning, if it isn't on any setup then the problem lies with said setup not the capability of the ps3

    thansk for the posts/comments

I am projecting the image onto an 8' Screen and my point/query is

I play a high def clip and it is fantastic, I play my only 2 blu movies and its better than standard DVD but not as good as the high def clips, same projector same cable same screen, the only difference is the PS3 and the source Blu ray, I believe the PS3 is setup correctly and my projector says it is receiveing 1080

so has anyone done played the high def clips from Microsoft and then a blu ray through the PS3, if so can you see any noticable differerence
    thanks

Maybe something to do with the way the HD demo clips are filmed (mostly with an Imax camera)? they will no doubt look better than any standard hd movie you purchase.

One good exampe of this for me is that I own a normal DVD of Super Speedway, which is an Imax movie, its looks a lot better than all my other dvd movies.

have to say that the ps3 PQ is very very good

cant say what the problem is but its not the bd or ps3.

General quality of BD is now much better than the early ones that came out

i also have to say that the quality of the ps3 blue ray is absolutely sublime on my AE1000.

i am also a happy xbox HD-DVD owner.

lets be honest here every ps3 blue ray review i have read has always praised the capability of the ps3 blue ray player.

I have a PS3 connected to a 1080pj (not a Pearl). The image from PS3 BD is good on the whole. Maybe the particular BD titles are not best suited to Pearl's dynamic iris. I've watched a couple of titles on a Pearl that looked really poor due to this. Try a different iris setting or turn the DI off to see if it makes a difference. :)
