Blu-ray 1080p24 playback at 60Hz or 72Hz. Does it really matter?

Hi everyone,

Since the 6G, Pioneer Plasma TV's were already capable to play 24fps based content at 3 x 24 = 72 Hz for judderfree, smooth playback.

Now, I would like to know, how the new Samsung PS50P96FDX 50" Full HD & the new Panasonic TH-50PZ70B 50" Full HD handle this 1080p24 signal. Are these sets really capable to play Blu-ray / HD DVD as smooth as on a Pioneer Plasma TV?

And what are they doing with the 1080p24 signal? Do they multiply and divide the frame rate in real time like this 24 x [-]3[/-] 5 / 2 = 60 Hz

:lease:

Nobody really knows for sure

Hi glen8,

I just saw in your signature that you have both the TH-42PZ70 and the PS3 in your HT setup

How do you experience the smoothness when you play the end score of a Blu-ray movie or during horizontal panning shots with your PS3 setup to output in 1080p24?

Cheers,
Fico

Unless my maths since school have deserted me wouldn't you get 36HZ

Maybe 24 * 5 / 2 = 60 Hz then?

I really don't know what these TV's are doing with the 1080p24 signal

Isn't it just normal 3:2 pulldown

1080p24 frames are: A B C D

1080p60 frames are: AAA BB CCC DD

So frame A is repeated 3 times, then frame B repeated 2 time, then frame C 3 times etc.

So the maths is 1080p24 has 24 frames per second, of those 12 are repeated 3 times making 36 frames, the other 12 are repeated twice making 24 frames, then 36+24=60

The Panny commercial screens are perfectly capable of displaying 24, 48, or 72Hz signals. I don't see why a limited version of this can't have been included in the PZ70. I wouldn't assume it's converting it to 60.

Surely it will just take someone to compare a 1080p/60 pan to a 1080p/24 pan and see if it's smoother?
