Blu "Erm' Grey-Ray

Finally got my PS3 wired to my Yamaha DPX1000 projector last night to sit down and watch Casino Royale on Blu-Ray. I went through all the settings to make sure all was ok with the PS3. The picture quality seems very good apart from the black level, it seems more of a dark grey than a true black. This is compared to my regular DVD player and Toshiba HD DVD player.
I am using 1080i(as I cant seem to get it to output 720p) HDMI to projector.
The PS3 munual seems very vague.
Is this a problem anyone else has noticed, or is there something I am missing from the PS3 set up....Any Ideas?

Hi Markk,

I decided to recalibrate my tv for my new PS3 Bluray input the other day using dve and found that the PS3 doesn't pass blacker than black. This was confirmed by a review I later read. It is possible it might get fixed with a firmware upgrade. Anyway the upshot was that the brightness had to be turned down a couple of notches. I don't know if that is anything to do with what your seeing...

Thanks Gadget Freak

Seems like that could be the trouble. I am right to assume that the 720p issue is a known one?

Thanks again

720 is a known issue, there is no onboard scaler in the PS3. BD is encoded at 1080, games at 720, DVD at 576. Just run into that one myself, temporarily. My client has a PF9 panasonic, and 'dot for dot' mode with the PS3 is mixed, as they say. Casino is spectacular, though as you say no 'blacker than black', games and DVD appear as progressively smaller windows! Fortunately the man's scaler shows up tomorrow, which should cure all problems. I do wonder about blacker then black, as it's meant to be HDMI 1.3.

It all makes sense now. If the PS3 does not scale, I cannot get 720p from Blu-Ray. :lesson:

No 720p output. Is there no way of fixing the output in the PS3 setup to output a 720p signal
or is it down to the scalers built into our displays to down 1080i to 720p?

Yes, I found that with mine, too.

On DVE the BTB bars are completely invisible.
