The customs charges are really starting to annoy me. It used to be that maybe one in five of my orders would be charged but now it seems more like four in five.

I've just gotten the dreaded card through the door today. DVD box set worth £28 from play international, payment due £12.89!

That's almost half the cost of the DVD itself.

I used to like CDWOW as my orders never got charged but I hear their going under so I need to find another good retailer.

It's not the Customs charge that bothers me so much as the rip-off £8 Royal Mail handling fee :(

Try http://www.axelmusic.com/ I've always been happy with them.

Customs limit is £17.99 for goods (except books which are zero VAT rated) sourced outside the EU. If a retailer will oblige get them to mark the item as gift which is duty free up to £34.99

Do Axelmusic parcels get charged for customs being as how they are based in the EU?

Axelmusic prices seem pretty good, free postage would have been nice but a couple of quid postage is better than getting stung for customs.

I'll second that. 'Handling fee' my arse - plonking it on a shelf somewhere and maybe being able to find it later. Making my blood pressure raise just thinking about it. And why do we have to pay a customs charge anyway again??? :(

Try DVD Pacific's Swedish Post option. I am having good success with it for my orders over the limit. It takes longer to get here than USPS but seems to avoid customs.

Well so far I've never had to send anything back to MovieTyme so I can't comment on that side of things, but I do highly recommend them.

I don't use Axel very often - when I have I've been very impressed. They sent me a wrong item once and when I contacted them about it they told me to keep it and sent me the correct one (just a pity the wrong one was rubbish and it went in the bin :D)

With choicesuk and CDWOW having problems I need to find a good DVD shop that doesn't have problems with customs.

I have PLAY.com for UK DVD's so for R1 discs you say:

    Movietyme.com
    Axelmusic.com

    Any others?

Also does anyone know a good shop for R3 discs as I used to buy a lot of martial arts movies from CDWOW (some under a fiver ) and find some bargians on R3 region big hollywood movies as well.

It appears that Amazon.com are being pretty good at avoiding Customs just now - I can't speak for myself personally but somebody at another DVD forum just ordered Heroes and an additional $200 worth of discs and they got through scott free!

Anybody else having good experiences with Amazon.com at the moment?

I wouldn't read anything more into that, than just lucky. Not every package is correctly intercepted and assessed. And I doubt whether the actual supplier makes a lot of difference either - except, of course those already mentioned that are either inside the EU or who pre-pay your taxes.

Had a similar thing with Fedex after ordering 2 items through StarWarsshop from USA, they wanted to charge me nearly £7 per item admin charges, I wrote them an email basically stating that I shouldnt pay as Id already paid shipping and handling and any further charges should be met by them, otherwise they should clearly increase their original prices, however if they did this their prices may not be as competitive so SWS may change couriers. They dropped the charges, RESULT:clap: Sometimes it pays to complain, as people have stated what exactly have they done for that £8 absolutely nothing.

You saying FedEx dropped the charges? If so you are very lucky or you may find that you are blacklisted now and they will no longer deliver anything to you.
