Bolockbuster are advertising a deal whereby you pay £13 and you can hire as many dvd sfrom them (through the post three at a time) with no late fees.....

It sounds great but where is the catch?

Have not heard of this yet apart from your post. There may not be a catch. I used to run a video shop for a while . It was only a small place not like blockbuster. The Rental market is not what it used to be. Sky movies and skybox office all have a good selection of films that seem to come on not long after a film has been made avalible to rent and then buy. It Is probably just a way a bringing in some business for blockbuster to get the old proffit margins up ;)
If it catches on it would seem to me to be quite a good idear. :)

I've just finished the month's free trial with Blockbuster and cancelled it as they weren't very good at sending out the newer titles.

I've stayed signed up with Lovefilm as they are pretty good at sending out new titles and there catalogue is a lot more comprehensive than Blockbusters - you can get everything from Superbits to sporting events.

i've tried a few of these online rental companies

www.lovefilm.com is the one I have stuck with though - they are the best of a mediocre bunch and are definitley the best for sending the latest releases

www.comparedvdrental.co.uk - shows you a list of most of the ones out there

Screenselect and Video Island kept sending me damaged discs though and after three complaints to each I'd had enough

I'm also trying out www.postadvd.com - better than most and they also rent PS2 games as well - no extra charges either

I've been using Blockbuster for almost a month now (freebie almost up!) and not had any complaints. Oh actually there was one where I was sent a disk that appeared to have a bogey stuck to it! They've always sent the top films on the list. Been watching soooo many movies
Have tried Lovefilm when they used to be called something more sensible, but did find them VERY slow, but it sounds like things have changed. Also tried Mailbox movies. Not bad but the selection of dvd's were not that great and you didn't stand a hope in hell if you wanted something recent. So far, Blockbuster have been very good, but we will see of that changes once I start paying for it!

I use ScreenSelect . They claim to have the largest catalogue (20K+), and will attempt to get hold of any R2 disc currently in distribution.

Ocassional delays on popular titles, but other than that... thumbs up. :smashin:

    I'm using the 3 disc service for £14.99 per/month.

These places all tend to be very good for ex-rental dvds to buy, sometimes titles are 2.99 -3.99!

    worth checking for older titles!

I'ev used Movietrak (4mnths) and Screenselect (few weeks free) and both were good, but the problem was I never seemed to get the top of my list titles. Plus they only gave 2 titles at any one time.
I now use Blockbuster and get they are very good at giving the top titles, never had to wait (2 months in). The back catalogue , and foreign film selection is not great and the website layout is not great.
With three films there is always something to watch I'd definitly recomend, especilly with 1 month free.

I like the idea of these rental companies but the problem is that so many people don't respect their DVDs scratching and smudging the discs. I've just had a trial period with choices DVD rental company, I can't remember what it's called exactly, and they were extremely quick sending me everything from the very top of my lists! Unfortunately a couple of discs were smudged and scratched but other than that I would definitely recommend them.

I think I'll try lovefilm.com if they stock Superbit DVDs. Do they have a good overall selection?

Love Film have a great selection, though they really should get the extended version of Leon.

Easily the best thing about Lovefilm is they really do check each film when you return it and clean as necessary. I have been with Lovefilm/dvdsontap for two years now and I've had less than half a dozen discs that I had problems playing.

I sometimes wonder if people scratch the DVDs on purpose.

I mean, how much damage can you do by taking the DVD out of its case and putting it in a machine?

I too was going to sign up with love film but as you said I couldn't find a contact phone number. I e-mailed them a couple of days ago but haven't heard anything since. Unless they get back to me I think I'll give them a miss.

I thought I would try out Blockbuster since love film didn't have a contact number and I filled out all of the forms only to discover when I got to the payment page that it was not secure! There's no way I'm giving cards details over a none Secure website. Having said that it should be according to their website, but I found no little padlocks sign on my browser & unencrypted according to the properties section. :thumbsdow

I was going to have a look at the range of DVDs that Lovefilm have but you can't actually browse their catalogue unless you sign up. Is it a comprehensive range they stock ? Do they have any (cough cough) adult titles ?

Also - regarding a previous post re lovefilm - I have been with them for months now - and I have not had one disc go missing in the post

I think its down to the "postie" on your particular round - or the staff in your local sorting office - Because one thing I have noticed is with all of these rental companies - its pretty obvious whats inside the packaging

However - Out of all of the companies I have tried - and I think I have now tried them all - the best IMHO is Lovefilm - I'm not worried re the contact number as I've never needed it and dont think I ever will - ChoicesDirect were very good as well - but i think they may have changed their name now

I'm now trying out Tesco's dvd rental service. Their rental service is run for them by Video Island, but their prices are cheaper than Video island's.Early days yet but I'm very impressed so far. Under £14 a month for 3 movies at a time and the discs like Lovefilm's have been immaculate.

I have been using tesco dvd rental since March and found them excellent - even send top titles out fairly quickly. Previously used screenselect who were good to start with then became very slow with the turnaround - they always blamed the post office, and wouldn't accept any responsibility :thumbsdow

Also, you get clubcard points with Tesco too.

www.cheekydvd.com do a rental service similar to the rest, but they only stock R18 porn. I've not used them so can't vouch for their quality.
