Well, after nigh on 21 years working at the same place, from tonight I shall be one of the great unemployed :D

Due to restructuring and the company losing tens of thousands of pounds each week I was offered a choice between a lower position with a cut in salsary and benefits or redundancy.......so I took the redundancy

Lorna has also applied for her voluntary redundancy too and will get it as she works in the same group as I do........I greased the wheels a bit it has to be said!

Looking forward to having the time to get out and take some photographs and with some fairly radical plans in the offing will be going to places that we have never been before so plenty of opportunities for photography there.

All of my exhibition entering will be put on hold for the moment, which is a shame but they ain't particularly cheap so cuts need to be made.

Posted here instead of General Chat because I know more people who hang around in here than in GC, hope that's ok Senu, Zone?

It's all a bit surreal today!

Best wishes for you both mate, hope everything goes as planned
I wish I was in line for a big redundancy then I could get a part time job shelf stacking and spend the rest of the time out in the countryside :)

Steve: If it's what you want to do and you are looking forward to it then GOOD LUCK. I hope you both enjoy the free time you'll have together. Make sure you keep posting on your travels though!

Good luck Mr. Green. A brave decision, but i'm sure you will look back on in the years to come as a good one.

If you're planning to do what I think you are, then you will never regret it. The world is a wonderful place, every corner of which is worth exploring.

There is a virtual plethora of cracked window frames in the back streets of Paris, and I hear that the electric sockets of Romania are a sight to behold.

Pack your camera, your woman and a change of underwear and head for the hills!

Well, it's not the biggest redundancy payout but it will be a very welcome buffer for the time we spend at home in the short term. A part time job would be great, something we are both thinkig of, but we have a massive list of things that we need to get done involving houses, tenants, pets and vehicles.......busy busy busy!

Cheers Gordon. I probably need to set up some type of blog but I am thinking that Flickr will be enough. Lorna is very keen to write a book so together we might be able to come up with something of interest to others.......dunno, lots to sort out. By the way, my mate Ash said how alike you pair look too :D

Cheers Scott. After everything we have both been through over the last copule of years we have adopted the 'you only live once' attitude so bugger it, we are off! It won't be until this time next year in all probability as we have lots to sort, but building toward that day will be very exciting

A brave decision, but one you won't regret.

Travel the hills and photograph all that is interesting... and hopefully you can ride out the storm until the economy recovers.

Keep us posted, and best of luck!

Yean, I think that this is the crux of it really. I have worked since I was 17 and never had any lengthy time out, never really travelled and always lived the 9-5 kind of life. Time for a change and we had the opportunity so we have grabbed it.....scary but exciting!

Yep, it's quite strange when you tell people you are being made redundant, with a massive grin on your face

Well done Steve & Lorna, big up for making such a radical decision.
I engineered redundancy twice in the last 20 years and being in the construction industry i only got the statutary
redundancy payment, but it all worked out, never been hungry, cold or without a roof over head since and have never looked back.

The best part is that you can really spend some quality time together with Lorna, money cant buy that.

For that reason i am retiring a year early than i should this year, not even bothered if i packed it all in today as life is running out so fast as you get older i dont want to waste any of it.

    Have a wonderful life Steve & Lorna:thumbsup:

    Edit
There are some really nice old doors and windows in Norway

 Well, it is likely that the 'roof over our head' will be a mobile one for a good while, but that will be the beauty of it all, six to twelve months just going and doing what we feel like, seeing different places, different people and different ways of life.......the dog might be a bit spooked but i'm sure he will get used to it!

I have said to Lorna that it will be difficult at times, in a small place etc etc but if we can get through what we have in the last two years then we can get through anything I reckon. It's not always going to be sunshine and happiness but that's what makes the journey more interesting and at least we will have some memories that are worth something rather than dulling our brains sat at work for the majority of our lives. Good luck on your retirement too :smashin:

By the way, the entire home cinema system will be up for sale soon........anyone want a monsterous SVS subwoofer? :D

Sounds like you're out of here and using the house(s) to generate rental income to support a nomadic low-cost lifestyle for a while. Good news! Something I'd love to do. Get thee gone but dont forget to keep us regularly updated (and use that map facility on Flickr so we can follow you around).

I hope it all works out for the best.. Honestly:)

The last 18 months dont seem to have been " dull"

I must say I find your attitude to it all infectious and very positive insofar as it is another uncharted territory

All the very best . well deserved too

Sell off the AV system by all means but hold on to the camera ( and internet access) for dear life!

You'll have to let us know on this thread what AV gear you're selling before letting the "plebs" know about it :D

I doubt we will get that far, purely because we are taking the mutt with us. Lorna has a friend in Macedonia who we intend to 'drop in on' and I have a tentative offer to photograph a festival in Croatia which will be nice if it comes off.

Oh yes........I'm really liking the look of the Hymers at the moment!

That will probably be the destination of our 'test run' in which we will learn exactly what we will need and won't need.......hopefully we will be able to dump around 50% of the stuff that Lorna is thinking she will need!

Short term, I will be up in Anstruther in April for the Fence Festival!

Blimey that IS a big decision!

But life is for living - I hope you enjoy it all.

I friend showed me the tape measure method of understanding life -

Consider your expected life span - pull out the corresponding inches from a tape measure and then retract your current age in inches.

Scary. God knows what I did with the last 4 foot.

    Take care. :smashin:

We saved hard for nearly 20 years to be able to move to Spain and after doing so was gutted to find that our son (who has Downs syndrome) could not get the education he needed there and so are in the process of moving back. Saying that it was the best 18 month I have ever spent and would do it again in an instant. (And will do again in a few years)
Enjoy it while you can, that's what I say ... :smashin:

I did what you are going to do nearly 30 years ago,not with the wife but 2 brothers and a friend and I can say it was the best year that I have had.
We had no plans where we where going we just headed to Belgium and drove, our car was a Singer Vogue estate, and it was.

Was not into photography in them days just beer and women, now it is just the beer:D and the wife
I would just like to add my best wishes to you and your wife and if like me you will still be talking about your adventure 30 years on with fond memories
