Blades of Glory HD DVD Review

Comedy is definitely a matter of personal taste, but the success of Blades of Glory ($118m at the US box office) strongly suggests it has a broader appeal than its mainly young, mainly male target audience. Leveraging the humour out of an all-male figure-skating pair guarantees many of the gags will be coarse and the film moves even further into that territory with its hints at incest between Franz and Fairchild. There’s little chance of any of it actually offending anyone though, but it’s probably best not to invite your granny to watch it with you. It prefers to be daft rather than clever, but still provides a decently developed story to hang the gags on, and of gags there are plenty. We even have a developing friendship and trust between the two leads that becomes crucial at the film’s climax. There aren’t many comedies of the ‘dumb’ variety that can take a repeat viewing, but there’s a good chance this is one of them.

As a package it is excellent value. The extras are mainly short in duration, but content is very good and challenges the film itself. In summary, this set is big on entertainment and only let down by disappointing technical quality.
