Excellent review Cas & what a film what a director & as you say what an opening! & an excellent performance from our "Hero" I have been a fan since i saw him in Wong Kar-wai 2046.
9/10 (still waiting for my steel to arrive)

"Drops the US release's unnecessary English dub" thank Goodness! :)

Top review, Cas. Blade of the Immortal is sheer samurai-slash-'em-up, ronin-a-go-go and manga mayhem of the finest kind. It's not often a film takes my breath away but this one did.

I would not want to waste my money on this unrealistic fantasy rubbish, having seen another film by same director. See Amazon reviews before you buy.

You miss the point entirely. The whole raison d'être of fantasy is that it is unrealistic, that is why it is called fantasy and not reality. And as a cinematic adaptation of a "Samurai manga", another signpost that this is fantasy, Blade of the Immortal is a superb film. In fact the fantasy elements, whilst still present, are second rank to the massive, full on action scenes. It sounds from your post like you have not even seen it. As one of my favourite fictional detectives, the now totally non-PC Charlie Chan, once said: "The human mind is like a parachute, it works only when it is open."

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is also fantasy unrelistic but it is excellent apart from the floating in air scenes . You are right I have not seen Blade of, only one other rubbish Sword Master Samurai film on Netflix by same director

I understand, not everybody is into fantasy per se and there are plenty of totally rubbish fantasy films out there: genre does not excuse lack of quality. What I found ironic about CTHD, which I enjoyed, is how it was suddenly discovered and embraced by arthouse critics and audiences yet was absolutely nothing new for devotees of Asian 'wire-fu' cinema. In fact, many other films have done this much better before. At least try Blade: as I have mentioned, the fantasy elements are very low key, and you might be surprised. If not, two more of my favourites are Lady Snowblood and Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman, both fantasy free zones. But in the end it all comes down to individual taste and there is something for everybody out there, that's the wonderful thing about cinema.

Martial arts, ninja and samurai films and as much Manga as I could get my hands on made up a large part of my entertainment especially in my teens. I have a great fondness for those genres even to this day, so I was always going to get this, mate. ;)

Regardless, if Cas gives a film the nod you know it's always worth a look. :)

Have you seen Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, this is the only martial arts film I can watch several times, everything about this film is excellent apart from the ridiculous flying through air scences

Did that come with a booklet? I think it's supposed to be in the steelbook edition only but just wanted to check.

Did you go for the HMV exclusive artwork slip or the steelbook? They're both in that offer and I'm still trying to decide as I like both!

I have indeed saw Crouching Tiger and thoroughly enjoyed it. :)

I get that wire work can be jarring for some, but it's been a staple of martial arts films, especially those coming out of Asia, for decades now. Some do it better than others, but it's never bothered me, even though as you say it can look ridiculous. I accept the gravity defying sillyness for what it is and just enjoy the films regardless.

This genre of films aren't meant to be taken too seriously. If you can suspend your disbelief and enjoy them for the entertainment that they are you'll get on with them a lot better. ;)
