I’ve decided to get an XBOX - partly due to the recent article in HCC and partly due to that fact that my PC isn’t up to playing Doom 3, which I understand will be available for the XBOX in the future. I think I prefer the Crystal version but I understand that these all use V1.6 boards that can’t be solderlessly(?) modded. If I get a black one, am I likely to get a V1.5 (or earlier) board or are new black versions also 1.6? Thanks.

They don't make the black one anymore (from what I understand) - however the most recent black ones made would be 1.6s.

There is no guranteed way to tell without booting the thing up however you can get the manufaturing date from the serial which will give you an idea -

1.5 is not much better. If you are really after an easy chip then your best bet is to buy one second hand. You are more than likely to get an older one there - you dont get the warranty but if you are chipping it you lose it anyway....

Thanks for the info. I think I’ll get a crystal one and hope that a solderless mod. will be available soon, or try and persuade my mate (who’s a bit of an electronics whiz) to do it for me - a couple of pints should do the trick!

Offers of chipping services are no longer allowed. If you have a modified X-Box for sale please place it in the classifieds. Thanks.

Just to update on this - I'm not sure that a solderless mod will be available for a 1.6 board due to it's make-up. There's a few things out there being developed to help but they still involve soldering.

no there is a 1.6 solderless adapter coming but it will only work on a 1.6 and none of the others (obviously).
Its not too hard but it will need to be quite large... oh well check xbox-scene.com for the prototype they have at the moment. I think its a smartXX solderless atm but Xodus/Xecuter will come soon (hopefully).
