Yep just like the PSP did, every month gave a new colour background.

I just got my PS3 today and the menu is in black & white yet the sony store is in colour. Is this definately meant to be in black & white? I scrolled through the time settings and all that seemed to do was change the contrast setting.

I've got my PS3 connected via component to a Panasonic PWD6 screen which I thought worked OK with NTSC. My first day of PS3 ownership has been dissappointing so far after discovering the Sony didn't implement resuming downloads or background downloading

A software update in March is going to take care of the background downloads and resuming downloads issue (the 360 on release didn't let you download in the background) as well as other new things.
The Sony Store is in colour because it's online and not part of the PS3's OS whilst the menu screen etc of the PS3 is. Keep checking it and you'll see it changing colour.

I believe the background changes every month like on the PSP with older versions of the firmware. I'm hoping that they include the option to use wallpaper in a future firmware update. That's something they really should have included from the start.

    Hello
When I had my PS3 (i had to send it back in the end - drive problem) the menu was only in black and white also. And on youtube, in various pics from forum members here etc etc I see the background in shades of blue, red, orange and I'm like WTF? I adjusted the time to various times of the day and it stayed black and white, and as you say the contrast just changed. It was a Japanese 60gb machine. If this happens on my replacment, whats going on? Does it make a difference if you're not using HD support? I was just on a special PS2 SCART with it, that can make the picture slightly sharper with a switch. Anyone any ideas? It really didn't change colour and sounds like this guy has the same problem.

Well mine is always like grey or black depending on time of day. However my PS3 has a software or possibly hardware issue at the moment, and maybe that's why the black / grey colour.

It used to have the reddish colour before but that went after a week, when I had the problem.

Mine was only ever black and white. And the issue was the disc drive not taking disks in, and also downloaded demos not working. That was as far as I got in finding errors, not that it wasn't enough.

How about downloaded games? Do they play?
Anyways might not be a BIG problem, but it must be some sort of problem. It's meant to be in colour. Also that looks better. Things like this will bug me.

Well demos didn't play at all, on my PS3 that had a black and white menu. I think another user here had the same problem. See if they play at all. Just download a free demo from the store. If they don't, theres a link..

My menu is grey as well but my PS3 has no problems, it plays games, demos and videos fine so I don't think there is a link.

Well I downloaded the GTHD game and it plays fine so the grey menu background doesnt seem to cause a problem.

I think the menu is currently grey because it's supposed to be grey. I manually changed the date to February and the menu changed colour. Changed it again to March and it changed colour yet again. The way I understand it the colour is supposed to change according to month. Give it a try and see what happens.

I heard most say the colour changes during each day, according to the time of day.

    [Edit]
    According to Wikipedia -

The PlayStation 3's default background color changes depending on the current month of the year, as follows:

    January – Yellow
    February – Light Green
    March – Pink
    April – Dark Green
    May – Purple
    June – Aqua
    July – Blue
    August – Violet
    September – Gold
    October – Light Brown
    November – Red
    December – Silver
In addition to changing colors with the month, the PlayStation 3 also changes brightness settings depending on the time of day.

I dont suppose the update could have caused a problem?

Its just that when I first turned it on I remember it being a colour but after I did the update it is either grey or black/white.

It's very strange. Mine has been black ever since I got it just over two weeks ago. I tried changing the date but that didn't help. I've also got the latest firmware which is 1.32. I don't understand why some are having this problems whilst others aren't. I think I'm going to do some more research on the net to see if there is any more information on this. What I would really like is the option to use one of my own pictures as a background wallpaper.

If you change the time zone to say eastern time -5, or something like that and then change the month, the colour changes.

But for some reason when changing month when using GMT, well on my PS3, (which probably is not a good example), it stays the same colour,

All set the system to the proposed release date in March. Might awaken the UK online play

So when you changed the time zone and month, the colours worked? Do they look spiffy?

I have managed to work out how the coloured menus work. Each month the menus will change colour. The beginning of December was red which gradually through the month changed to silver / grey, so most people who have only recently bought PS3's have witnessed only the grey phase. Throughtout January it will change from grey to yellow, then green and so on. The colour changing process is very gradual and over the past three weeks has been mostly shades of grey.
It makes no difference what time zone / country you select - the eastiest way to see for yourself is to set the clock for 12 midday and slowly change through the days of a month, giving the PS3 time to refresh. Hope this helps.

This is exactly my understanding of how it works too. We'll only have the grey/silver menu for a few more days till it changes colour.

^^ I thought that but when I changed my date to June and it was still black & white background, despite the rest of the menu being in colour. I'm pretty sure it's meant to be a hint of blue instead of the the black & white that I see.

It might be because you haven't changed the time - it's always black/dark in the evening.
