I have noticed recently on different TVs in different locations, black lines top & bottom of the screen, both on normal house aerial and portable TV aerial, also my plasma TV picture reducing to a small picture surrounded by a thick black boarder on a couple of occassions, also struggling at times to find a signal when first switched on. At first i thought it might be voltage drop on the mains supply, but i checked this and the voltage reading was 236v (plenty). I have read about HD signal and TV settings but could do with some simple reasons in plain language if possible.

Hope the above makes sense to someone?

Most terrestrial analogue transmissions are in 14:9, to cater for non-widescreen viewers, so when displayed on a 16:9 TV you will see black lines top and bottom. It's a compromise to attempt to satisfy both camps.
