Checking the specs and menushots from the site I can say that it's equal to the french, belgian 3DVDset from last october. But in NTSC and maybe cheaper.

well, why was the editor raving about this realease on HTF ?

Not so special, I'd rather a cheaper PAL release.

I was pretty underwhelmed by Black Hawk Down, sure it looked good and sounded good, but overall i didnt feel for the people or characters involved in the film, must say if theyre going to release an ultimate edition wheres the DTS sound ? i can guess that theyre saving that for the superbit release, no wonder i hold back from purchasing Columbia titles these days since they always release another version 6 months to a year down the road

When I first saw this film I felt the same as you. On my third viewing I realised that mr Scott wanted us to not feel emotion for the characters in a saving private ryan kind of way.

Its genius when you think about it.

Stacks of generic young men, running about getting killed and yet we did not feel for them as we did not identify with them, or even recognise them.

Isnt that the role of the modern combat soldier???

Interesting. I've not seen this film as I had been put off by reviews stating that the American soldiers' characters were fairley well fleshed out and developed.....whilst in the background, faceless Somalian M16 fodder characters were slaughtered. Struck me as likely to be jingoistic gung-hoism of the highest order.

    Q. Is this fair comment - from people who know more about it than me (ie : all those of you who have seen it ?)

Personally I would say its the other way around.

As before, all of the US characters could be the same, whilst you can clearly spot the Somalian chain of command so to speak.

Its a must see modern war film.

    The lighting is fantastic.

    Captain benefit.

    Point taken.

But isn't Starship Troopers a film about capitalist excess, right wing politics and the nazi party,

or is it simply about alien invasion???:boring:

See it. If you enjoy seeing a well made film then see it. It is so well put together, seamlessly edited and the war fare, fantastically directed. Has to be the best modern war fare film made so far.

Whats the point in the new release, no DTS.... Why? Its far superior than DDigital sountrack. I believe this is one of the few movies that the DTS soundtrack makes quite a differance, If you like the film get it with the best sound.

There wasn't enough room for a DTS track because of the commentary tracks. They would have to split the movie on two discs if they wanted to include the DTS track.

Bugger! I've just ordered the £9.99 R2 from Play! I was half expecting them to pull the new R1 release because of the Gulf War - and they still might!

Not sure if I want to pay the extra for the 'Deluxe' version of this - does anyone think it would be worthwhile?

I don't think so. I have the R2 and it is excellent. The R1 is just the R2 with an extra disc, that most people will only watch once. I probably won't see disc 2 of the R2 for a long time.
