Five has always been one of the best channels on Dsat in terms of picture quality.
Virtually every other broadcaster including SKY and the BBC are frequently put to shame:(

Both broadcast digital and DVD use the same codec to compress the data, give a program enough bitrate and a good encode it can match any commericial DVD release.

You're not wrong there - the picture is stunning, all things considered.

Not just Dsat - shows like CSI: Miami looked stunning on Freeview too when I watched it prior to getting Sky (CSI's pretty much all I watch on Five, so if they're crap all the time for everything else on Freeview now, apologies).

Looks like five are determined to give everyone who can receive their channel over digital the best possible picture quality (just wish my Freeview reception was usable for Five over the winter...).

Indeed, Miami looks gorgeous, the sharpness and colour just seem to be so far ahead of what you would consider the norm for UK digital broadcasting.
They should be congratulated as well for getting rid of the DOG, all in all they show a concern for their viewers perception of the channel that the BBC, ITV, CH4 and SKY seem to take for granted.

Perhaps being the "little" fish in a pond full of sharks makes a difference:)

I think it probably helps that the CSI series have high production values too (I think they're all shot in HD) - if you showed someone a scene at random I think they'd be hard pushed to say that it originated from a TV show rather than a movie.

Too true. I'm actually raising this with my MP as I've had a letter from her (or at least someone with access to a supply of House of Commons headed paper and her signature stamp) asking for my views on certain local & national issues (hmm... heard nothing since moving to this property two years ago, but suddenly there's an election looming...). You never know, I may get a vague promise of possibly doing something about it...

Five have a news/weather segment around 10pm, the SKY EPG shows this as a seperate program while other printed media/tv guides sometimes don't.
Since the EPG has the movie in two parts you need to select both parts or use the series link function.

    Live and learn eh?
    :)
