Never shoot at anything that can't shoot back - bigger weapon wins!
Think this was one of the first BR's I got, Sure it was a slim case jobbie from a Zavvi store!
faulty disc do happen, check for fingerprints.
For those tuning in from Scotland, that translates as “Sure it was a slim case type/thing from Zavvi store!” Unless Zavvi have really gone down the toilet
Great review Cas. This makes up for all the dross you've had to watch this year.
A sure buy, but was ever going to NOT to be?!
Had the same issue-reported to OPPO support
Loads of people with an Oppo have reported problem's with the audio dropping out. Happens on both the Theatrical and extender cuts apparently.
Have you checked the FW? Stateside the latest FW has apparently fixed this.
Thanks Cas, yes have to have this!
Only the dead has not seen the end of war but only the lucky ones alive can see this till masterclass UHD from Sony till the end.
Completely agree with the scores.
Great review, not surprised at all with the ratings. Getting my copy soon, can't wait to play this once my screen and projector are installed.
A 10? Blimey? I haven't seen this in many years but I recall thinking it was a pretty run of the mill war movie and another dud from Scott. Maybe I should give it a rewatch.
I stayed in a brand new backpacking hostel in Cairns in 2002, and this was on a loop on the telly for the whole week I was there. I haven't been able to watch it since, but seeing this review, I might have to give it another chance...
Or maybe you were right the first time. I remember same – watching it and wondering what all the fuss is about. When I re-watch I rarely change my mind. The apparent quality of this disc, though, is enough to make me want to experience it regardless. I do think a very, VERY good quality disc can make a fairly average movie very watchable/enjoyable. See: Mortal Engines, Passengers, Black Panther etc.
slightly on/off topic..... disappearing down a wiki rabbit hole i discovered that the son of Aidid (leader of the opposition in this battle) became a citizen of the US and joined the marines also serving in Somalia... i wonder what his old man thought of that....

This might be the best Atmos soundtrack I’ve heard in quite some time
This is a film I've only ever managed to watch in parts.
It's currently £19.99 on Amazon - Ordered
perhaps you could clarify? Firstly, this isn't a "massacre the innocents", it's survival against an attacking horde. Rules of engagement are heavily referenced throughout the film.
secondly, you may be interested to know that on the commentaries it has been said that some Somali audiences love the film and actually view it as a victory over the USA.
That bit about the Pakistanis serving water - sorry, it's true. maybe you could read up on things instead of seemingly inferring it's some made-up USA garbage?
Maybe your Somalian colleague would like to explain why he wouldn't have a positive word to say about a film that basically truthfully details what actually happened? is he perhaps disgusted that his people turned on a force that were trying to save them from mass starvation, orchestrated by one of their own people? Or is he perhaps disgusted about the conduct of his own people, stripping the dead and parading them around the streets?
You may be right. I'd struggle to think of a time when a re-watch made any difference for me.
Whilst I love a good 4K transfer, for me the movie is really all that matters. I watched The Old Man and The Gun at the weekend on DVD (it's all Cinema Paradiso had on offer, as is increasingly becoming the case) and I loved it. Blurry picture of course, but the movie was still fantastic.
I would have thought about 7 for the movie at best IMO (PQ/SQ aside). It's OK, I have enjoyed it the past two times I watched it but it did get me thinking how 9 relates for this movie.
Objectively I thought of something like 'Schindler's list' which is a very different war movie but still brutal. So say 'Schindler's list' gets 9-9.5 for the movie I can't really square how 'black Hawk Down' would get 9 for the movie.
At the end of the day it's all personal opinion but for me this movie doesn't make it into the highest tier of cinema.
Yes I have the latest UK firmware update (Feb 2019)
God no. If I think a film is crap/boring/average it doesn't matter how good it looks or sounds. I'm not buying it!
Yep, gotta agree, it might be shinier, but it's still the same movie. More easy on the eye because it's shinier, but.......
It’s why the Transformers movies exist
Yep... except Bumblebee.....to me, that was the way they all should have been.
The rest, except the first, absolutely!
3/4 of the way though watching this - the picture and sound are 10/10 for me. I’m playing on a Panny UB9000 and had 2 brief audio dropouts but am unsure whether they were intentional or not.
Spoiler: Minor spoilers
one is when someone bends down to pick up someones hand and put it in his pocket. The second was when someone was shot square in the back.
bits you reference are stillframed for dramatic impact I believe.
They are purposeful.
It's not a bass heavy film by today's standards. I can't remember the Blu-ray very well, but I watched the UHD last night and found the sound pretty good, but I do use a BEQ curve which helps give a bit more impact below 20hz.
