Great review Cas, entirely agree with all of it. Saw BHD at the cinema and loved it. Always seems to fly under the radar (Excuse the pun!)

One of those huge films I just never got round to seeing

Thanks, I'll be sure to correct that as soon as I can get my hands on this.

Agree with everything here Cas, truly excellent PQ and the Atmos track is every bit on par with it.

Great review Cas, glad to read about all the Blu extras, I bought without knowing any of this, so will be nice to watch them when it lands this week.

Btw - for those wanting to purchase, check out the uhd price drop threads, can be had for £16 (if purchased with another UHD ...).

Have you seen Saving Private Ryan?
Its like the beginning of that (the beach landing scene) but lasting an hour and a half.

One of my favourite films and I will be picking this one up when I can.
Had it on DVD and BD and was always disappointed that it didn't come with DTS sound (I think one version did, but I could never find it for sale), so stoked that it now comes with Atmos.

Saw this at the cinema years ago- never forget the Gatling gun scenes when they open fire and let rip on the rooftops later in the movie.

You know, I haven't seen that either actually :rotfl:

War films aren't my favourite genre, so even the ones that sound great often get overlooked when it comes to choosing a movie. I'm not convinced I would like SPR but I always thought I probably would like BHD, I just never got round to it.

      Nice review.:smashin:

Think i've only seen this once (therefore can't agree/disagree if this is one of his masterpieces) but I intend to add this to my small collection at some point.

It'll then sit alongside the few other Sony discs (which all look absolutely stunning) I have.

I saw this many years ago and I just find it hard to stomach to watch it again. Politically it doesn't belong in this day and age. I have a Somalian colleague at work and I doubt he would have anything positive to say about this movie.

Also, don't get me started on the ending when the Asians were serving drinks to the US!

Omg as my 3 year old would say ( courtesy of his big sista!)

You are in for a treat. War films are not my fav either but Ryan and BHD are of epic quality

Watched this last night and the 4K UHD is a revelation. Probably the best example of how to upgrade a standard Blu-ray to 4K there is on the market at the moment. Absolutely stunning and even more noticeable if you've watched the old 2009 Blu-ray numerous times like I have. However there was a major problem on my Oppo UDP-203 with the extended version. Twice the sound simply dropped off despite it being received by the amp and with about an hour to go the second drop off completely threw out the lip synching. Obviously this was to do with the seamless branching as it wasn't present on the theatrical version. Is this an issue with the Oppo or has it happened to anyone else using a different machine?

Thanks for the mildly subtle utilitarian vs im/moral doctrine debate review, Cas!
This is definitely a rarity; insofar as it feels like a film you need only see once, but the effect is so great at all that is laid out in rapidity that you may well misremember or, fail to pick out details. It's also one in which revisits had me questioning how I'd reacted before at certain scenes - from shock and awe, to laughter and then sympathy and so on.
Thankfully it sounds like the disc update is worthy of the film and will definitely be purchased. Cheers.

Thank you for letting me know that. Is it possible I have a faulty disc, which seems unlikely considering the way they're manufactured? I will return it to HMV this weekend and see if the replacement works. The only reason I brought it up is because I've seen firmware updates on the Oppo that fix issues with specific discs which is what has aroused my suspicion in this case.

I find the BluRay audio to be loud, but a bit thin. Never seemed to be much for the sub to do. Is this just me/my setup/my poor memory?

Any particularly standout scenes I should review?
