I'm not a technical guy, i'm sure others will give a better explanation but the bits era is way gone. it used to represent the amount of memory the console had to play around with. But these days as consoles are more sophistimacated they have loads more memory and it can be divided between graphics, cpu etc. Think of it like modern pc's, simply having 512mb ram aint squat if your processor speed is too low (ie <1ghz). And on top of that a pc with relatively poor memory can outperform another pc if it has a dedicated graphics chip (ie a card with say 256 mb dedicated to graphics alone).
So when consoles were relatively simple you could just measure them by how many bits they were. Nowadays as theres so much more interelated electrical wizardry going on it not so easy to compare.
Just take a peek at the next gen consoles specs and see how complex they are with multiple chips working in parallel.
I'm sure one of the other bods will be able to explain it better
