Good idea for the thread as I was wondering what exactly qualified as a "little bird"! Nice shots BTW.

I stepped back when they came out of the water.... I was about 10 feet away. He told me afterwards that he worked in an office that was 30 yards away and always came out to feed them and they were used to him and recognised him when he appeared. Braver man than me even with that.....

Question: How to improve to get more interesting pictures and sharper please?

No shooting data I can see in the EXIF.... might help asses the shooting technique...

ah ok I noticed that yesterday exports in LR stopped including metadata, I must have clicked the wrong box at some point. This photo was 300mm, f9.0, 1/400 ISO 100....so probably wider open and faster shutter speed would be a good start :)

Thanks Jim, its Canon AF case 2 - continue to track subjects ignoring possible obstacles, evaluative metering.

As Jim says a faster shutter. Also as you're shooting up at the bird like this the bird is effectively in shade which is never going to give you the sharpest shots. Not a great deal you can do about it with shots like this, you just have to accept you'll lose some sharpness/detail.

The eyes in shadow give that an edge, very nice.

Both at the limit of my zoom again :( but I did find another hide which is quite close to a perch where the Kingfishers apparently sit sometimes, it's going to be interesting to see how many hours I'll have to sit there to get a shot
