We're trying to piece together his trades with the aim of taking the information to the police and perhaps making a joint case at the Small Claims Court based on what the police advise. Here's what we know so far about BeStu's actions:

    [dead link removed by mod]

If you want to add to this list, please use the form here:

    [dead link removed by mod]

    Here's his info:

    Name:
    Stuart George Bedford

    Addresses:
    Flat 2
    4 Park Street
    Ripon
    HG4 2AX
    North Yorks

    May have moved to:

    Casa Mia
    Pleigne de Fillol
    Montaigu de Quercy
    82150
    Tarn et Garonne
    FRANCE

    Mobile No.:
    Known to the Moderators

    Bank Details:
    Name - S Bedford
    Bank - Nationwide
    Branch - Harrogate
    Sort Code - 07-44-56
    Account No. - 37231900

    IP Address:
Mark Haywood (Moderator) is on the case

He had two trading threads on the forum, one in the DVD Classified Ads and another in the Hardware Classified Ads. There appears to be about 15 people who he accepted money from but did not, in turn, send any goods to. This thread is hoped to centralise all information on BeStu to aid our efforts towards getting some compensation.

    Thanks
    Dan

I think we should take this off-forums somewhere because he most probably is still reading these threads...

I can host a BB or something, I'll look into doing that tonight.

I think you'd need extra special permission to do this! I'd like to think that my account details couldn't be looked up by any employe who was a bit bored.

Sounds good to me. Would it be possible to block his ip address from the forums if we could find it out?

On another note, has anyone else found AVForums really slow for the last day or so? I'm lucky if I can post in under 2 mins! I'm trying to contact Marvt74, sjgill, Seth Gecko, Strong Silent and GreasyWeasel about their (possible) trades with BeStu but I can't get emails of PMs sent. I'll try again later.

I thought he'd been banned from the forums?

Which by the way I'm not sure is a good thing. I'd prefer if he were allowed to read these threads and respond rather than give him an excuse not to bother visiting back here anymore if you see what I mean.

I've asked the mods whether they've checked his IP address against any recent visitors... but am waiting for a reply on that.

It would indeed be good to know whether he's been checking in from time to time to see what we've been up to since he's done a runner with all our money.

However, I don't think he should be able to read any threads about how we intend to go about dealing with him as it may be enough to give him a tip off as to our intentions... which is why I suggested moving those off-site.

the one thing that gets me in all this is he actually turned someone down for their offer for a dvd, which i wouldn't have thought he'd do if he had no plans to ship the stuff..

although it does seem more and more unlikely, do you think there's a chance he's just incommunicado through no fault of his own?

I though this too. I think he started off genuine (especially with the relatively low-priced DVDs on offer when the thread was created ie little profit if he aimed to rip us off) but then decided to get as much cash as possible (he added 3, high priced DVDs to his trade thread after a few days of trading). He also hinted that he was under financial strain (£120 a week for storage). Maybe I've read too much Ian Rankin or inherited my father's cynical gene but I think most of BeStu's story, appart from his divorce (more financial pressure?), is fake. He just seemed to want us to believe it a bit too much, almost as if he was deluding himself. Having said that, I'm pretty crap at predicting the outcome of Ricki Lake :D

Yes, he also started sounding legit in the HW thread - even more so when he 'accidentally' broke the mod rules by selling something off-site.

I think he's been thinking about this con quite a long time

Classic con tactics. Do a few successful trades to gain trust and positive feedback. Notice how he received good feedback from most of the people he eventually ripped off.

I'd like to divorce him from his nuts.

    Email address - trautsfordeb@yahoo.co.uk
    Host Name - user-1487.lns3-c8.dsl.pol.co.uk

I notice that his email addy looks a little like it has been designed with ebay in mind... or am I just reading into things that may not actually be there? I've tried a quick search of ebay names without success so far...

Hmm, that's a UK ISP (Cable & Wireless / Energis) as well which is a bit odd given the ring tone associated with his mobile.

    Its all becoming clear now.

If you turn the 'b' in his email address (upside down) into a 'p', his email address is actually an anagram of:

    topfraudster@yahoo.co.uk

Or am I reading too much into things? ;)

Just FYI, I used to work for a banking software company based near Heathrow. As part of my job I worked on installing and configuring AS/400's, SQL servers and PC front ends to all this.

Rest assured that in all the installaitions I did abroad and at home I could look at anyones account and xfer money to/from, I can also *mostly* remember the admin equivalent passwords - which according to my ex work buddies still have not changed!

I also used to open and close dummy accounts as well as apply for loan (and approve) accounts etc.... these were all of course in the aid of testing the installaition and security. Yes its all logged and yes, anyone with about 10 minutes of CL/SQL *could* remove the log entries. I would like to stress that I am telling you this in the hope that someone who works for the bank you need info from can help you out. It wasn't one of our sites and even if it was, for me to gain access would be illegal so i'm afraid I would not be willing to.

I was a Technical Consultant, the clients client workstations are configured that any operator can at least view peoples details. They have to be able to in order to perform basic security checks with you over the counter ;)

Wish you guys all the best in the hope that you get this b:stard. Some of us earn our money, why do these people think they should be able to just take it?

Just wondering if anyone has heard anything more on this?

Dan - I've filled in my details in for you. Sorry I couldn't do it in the week, I was trying to enjoy myself on a family holiday. I didn't think I'd been in this mess! :(

Yeah, I had to use IE to get the number to show and it still took a minute or so to load. Wouldn't bother looking it up though, it tells you next to nothing, just his feedback score. You have to guess his username or get ebay to change their policy. I couldn't even find a way to email them about it without having traded with him first!

    Hi All.

After nearly 2 years, on the 13th August 2007, Stuart Bedford was found guilty of 7 counts of 'Obtaining a money transfer by deception'. He was sentenced to 10 months in prison (suspended for 12 months).

I'm going to get the case result framed and hung above my mantle!
