Best WM map software?

As above, I used to love the Nokia Maps application on my N95 and would like something similar for my WM device - Sony Xperia X1.

Not too fussed about price but I want to be able to download the maps and use mostly for on foot. I've looked at google maps but I think the maps are downloaded over data connection.

I want something which doesn't require a data connection but just uses the built in GPS - I generally use it to find my way around when travelling, setting a marker so I know my way back to where I started.

Any suggestions?

GPS doesn't need any form of data connection, but many phones support A-GPS which is normal GPS with help from the mobile network triangulation to help find your location quicker.

If you buy one of the offline solutions (i.e. all maps pre-installed) then you wont need to download maps either.

TomTom, Garmin, CoPilot etc etc all offer offline SatNav software for Windows Mobile. In fact, WM is probably the best supported platform for this sort of thing due to the huge commercial customer base out there.

Check out websites like Handtec who have a good selection.

Thanks Rob, sorry if I was unclear. I know GPS doesn't require a data connection, I meant software like Google Maps which requires a data connection for the maps, they are not stored locally. I just wanted opinions on the best map software out there that is best for on foot and stores maps on the device so no downloading over data connection required.

In that case my post above still applies... the offline solutions like TomTom, Garmin etc will do what you need in car and on foot.

Thanks Rob, I'm just after opinions from users as to which they use and why they like it - what features made them choose it etc.

I've tried Destinator this morning on a friend's PPC which was ok but a little rough around the edges and not as nice visually as Nokia maps. It lacked the polish and was a bit fiddly plus the points of interest icons weren't great etc. That was Destinator 7, however, and I see that v8 looks much nicer.

I'd appreciate comments on iGo, TomTom, Garmin etc

Garmin always impressed me, as the interface seemed to suit smaller screens very well and the routing is excellent.

TomTom is TomTom... if you know it you know it, however it's applied :)

Those two I would recommend for any mobile platform. I personally prefer Garmin, but couldn't justify that any more than 'I just like it'.

I have Navigon on the iPhone and think it's fantastic, but I can't remember if they offer it on other platforms?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check out Garmin. I downloaded the trial off their website and the interface seems nice though it hasn't really worked for me as a trial and I don't have a separate receiver. I have an Xperia and believe there is a way of making Garmin recognise the internal GPS so I'll dig further. Thanks again.

I use TT7 on my WM mobile devices , very good and easy to use and does the job well .I also have Miomap & Igo8 on Windows CE devices , Miomap is excellent . I think the TT maps are most up to date [I think there Navteq] , not sure how often the others are updated . I noticed you say 'on foot'.
Have you considered something like Memory Map ? . This uses OS maps . I was interested in this for myself but I dont think it comes cheap .Check out the website , just do a Google search .
