    We've had drummers.... bassists.... guitarists....

    Time for keyboards !

In my book Jon Lord of Deep Purple (well, actually he's just left) rules supreme here. Classically trained, his improv work is just superb on live sets.

    Rick Wakeman gets second.

Nigel Tufnell of Spinal Tap gets a tongue in cheek third - Anyone remember 'Lick my Lovepump' ?

    1. Jon Lord

I'd have to nominate Monty Oxy Moron, of the Damned.

He looks a bit like Jeremy Clarkson, and yet somehow he can still play keyboards in a most fitting manner.

I'd second Bill Bailey, too. The ONLY man who can make 'comedy' songs that are actually funny!

Easy. Jimmy Smith. Master of the mighty Hammond Organ. The rest aren't fit to lick his boots. And The guy at Odeon Scunthorpe is pretty good as well.

Paul Hardcastle knows his way around a key or two.

Ron Jeremy was pretty adept with his organ

Seen The Damned " live " many times, Monty is very amusing to watch, he's definitely got Jazz ( Evil Dead ) Chops !
Roy Bittan, yes, Bruce and Mr. Loaf be thankful.
Dave Greenslade, Go Buddy Go !
    Jimmy Smith, oh yeah !
    Billy Preston too :)

Klaus Wunderlich and all the great Wurlitzer heroes of Tower Ballrooms, Blackpool !

My favourite....Tony Banks of Genesis

    Gringott,
Did you see the Damned do their 'interlude' Moron/Sensible solo battle thing? Marvellous stuff. They're one of the best live bands I've seen.

I first saw The Damned at Eric's in Mathew Street, Liverpool, original line-up in seventies, Rat Scabies on drums / spitting.
    Seen various line-ups since.
The most memorable times are probably the Music For Pleasure tour, when Vanian said Nick Mason ( Pink Floyd as everyone knows ) produced the album, I thought he was joking !!!
The Strawberries tour with three Singing Nuns, stained glass windows and stuff, and a gig in Newtown, Shropshire around 1983, I remember it was a nice pub in the main High Street, a large parrot in it's cage in the entrance , as various shapes and sizes of multi-coloured spikey punks, goths and mods strolled in before seeing the band, the Landlord ( looked just like Dave in Minder ), was becoming increasingly nervous.
I went up to buy a round, probably because I worked in a bank and looked " normal " he didn't think I was with the punks. He said " I see the animals have come out tonight, what do think they look like ? " I said to him, if I were you your parrot might be safer behind the bar. One of the punks walked in with the parrot on his head. He quickly brought the parrot and cage behind the bar !!!
That venue was the last time I saw The Ruts, their lead singer, Malcolm Owen pretended to hang himself while singing In A Rut, soon after in NME we read he hung himself for real, sad loss, brilliant band, they were just taking off too. Echoes of Ian Curtis and Joy Division.
Much as I love them, The Damned have had the odd off night, a few years ago I saw them at Morecambe, Lancashire, they were all dressed in white Environmental Protection Suits they were awful. :D

Ditto! That Cockney Medley cracks me up every time. Love the "Richard Clayderman Plays Three Blind Mice" parody as well. :D

Hmm... great on keys. Chester Thompson gets my vote (Tower Of Power) for best organist. He could hold down a thundering bassline with his feet and solo over the top like nobody else on this planet. No idea about more mainstream keyboard players... Wakeman is a god though. I'd have to pick jazz guys - Herbie, Keith Jarrett and perhaps Chick Corea (when he's not messing with cheese). Don't like too many of the earlier pianists - Oscar Peterson etc. Monk and Bill Evans are exceptions.

    MuFu.
