    Dear Gents and ladies
I have just purchased a second hand arcam dv88+ dvd player to pair my linn av5103 and av5125 setup and was wondering if anyone who knows these components (or who owns a similar setup) could advise me which would be a good surround sound cable to use, I can spend up to £100. I have an old tv at the moment, (which I hope to exchange for a projector in 12 months or so!) and the only input is scart so I will have to have scart from the dvd player to tv for the picture. But was thinking of a digital coax from the dvd player to the av5103 processor for the surround sound signal. One of the cables I had in mind was the IXOS XHD608 DIGITAL COAX 1M. Please could you give me your opinions. If there is anyone out there with the same equipment I would be interested to here what solution you use.
    Regards Daryl

To be honest I don't find there to be a great deal of difference between digital cables. There are differences but they are very subtle. As for recommendations I would suggest trying the Nordost Silver Shadow.

Do you have digital cables already? Just to inform you, since i play a lot on these cables, i have a cable that beats the Nordost offering of silvershadow. No kidding, you need not spend much. If you have friend's there who own the silvershadow, you are more than welcome to try it against the SS. See for yourself. If you are not impressed, just send the cable back and i will refund. This is the most dramatic of what transformed in our testing out with cables among our audiophile friend's here. Anyhow , this is only for digital cables. The cable is a custom solid core silver 4 nine s purity, in tribraid, it component is sourced from Japanese specialist shop. At $125 , and beating out those $500 cables, wow, perhaps the only hindrance is, if you are not adventurous enough.

This is the difference noted against the SilverShadow.

It (the Jap silver digital cable) has more substance and body to the mids and lows. There is more extension and definition. Because of its very silent background, you can hear more inner detail on the recesses of the recording. Air and space is top rate. The SS spoils this as it calls itself too much attention when you hear the pronounced highs, it collapses much to the sides where the speakers is. It should not be doing this, otherwise , info on the deepest of the soundstage is spoiled.
And the best part, is when you play those complex music, the highs will never sound congested or searing in the long listening session. Non tiring , long listening sessions on varying music is paramount to enjoying your music .

Just sharing something to another fellow audiophile.

Have you gone as far as using powerline conditioners

We sell the Nordost cables at my shop Sevenoaks Edinburgh (as well as many others) and it retails for £300 for a 1m interconnect. Altenatively there is the Moonglow at £175 for a 1m.

If you are looking for cheaper cables then the Black Rhodium Allegro at £40 is nice as is the Van Den Hul Videolink 75 at £50.

Cheers for the help, I'll keep it in mind! I've got a couple of weeks until I get hold of the Arcam, so I have a bit of time to have a look around.

Crusty, forgive me if Im asking something stupid here. but I was thinking that I had to have a digital Co-ax cable to link between my dvd player and processor to get d.d. and dts 5.1, but you recommended me the nordost digital interconnects. Is there any difference between these two cables (besides quality) or is a digital co-ax the same as a digital interconnect. would I only need the one digital interconnect between the dvd player and processor?
    Thanks Daryl

A digital co-ax cable is a digital interconnect.

There is a slight difference in quality between the two Nordost cables but not much. I wouod suggest you arrange to have a listen to a few digital cables and make your own mind up.

well, in a way, there are 2 types of digital cables.
SPDIF (the one with the light in it) and Coax. A (digital) coax connection is superior to a spdif connection

    Hi,

SPDIF is the Sony Philips Digital Interface Format and is not only for coax or optical according to me. SPDIF is the format and coax/optical are the connection types over which the SPDIF is used.

    Kind regards,
    Erwin
