Everyone moans about sequels, but some are better than the originals, what are peoples favourite sequels and does The Silence of the lambs count? It wasn't punted as a straight sequel to manhunter and as we all know they since remade it, but it could be considered a sequel, so I'd say that it's one of the best (is that whffle or does it make sense).

More bad news on Sequels - Miramax have apparently bought the web addresses for scream 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Delights aplenty I'm sure.....

No, "Silence Of The Lambs" doesn't count. :)

"Empire Strikes Back" and "Godfather Part II" are the examples everyone always mentions.

But why doesn't it count - as far as the books are concered, silence is a sequel, so shouldn't that translate to the film. I know it's a grey area and no one talks of it as a sequel but maybe it is...

For a Few Dollars More is definitely better than a Fistful of Dollars and arguably even better than The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

In my book it does count which ever way you look at it, 'cause it's the middle episode of a trilogy...

"Wrath of Khan" immeasurably much better than "The Motion Picture".

"Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey" definitely a step up from their "Excellent Adventure".

Don't know if this counts, but 'Unforgiven' is slightly better than 'The Outlaw Josie Wales'. But only slightly, mind.

And I preferred 'The Two Towers' to 'Fellowship of The Ring', but that probably doesn't count either...

of course silence of the lambs counts as sequel! how could it not? does it star hannibal = yes! is he in manhunter? = yes. did silence of the lambs come out after manhunter? = yes logic dictates that its a sequel then surely?

would you not count "clear and present danger" or "Patriot Games" as sequels either?

The book "Silence Of The Lambs" is a sequel to the book "Red Dragon", but I don't think that the film "Silence Of The Lambs" should be regarded as a sequel to "Manhunter". "Hannibal" (film) is clearly a sequel to "Silence Of The Lambs" (film) and the film "Red Dragon" could usefully be classed as a "prequel" to both.

red dragon is a (pointless) remake of manhunter, so as they both came from the same source "Silence" must be a sequel.

    The facts as i know them;

1 the film manhunter came out before the film of "silence" (anyone disputing that?)

    2. the book red dragon came out before the book "silence of the lambs" (anyone disputing that?)

    3. the events in Red Dragon take place BEFORE the events in Silence of the lambs (anyone disputing that?)

    4. the pointless sequel Red Dragon came out AFTER "silence" and "Hannibal" therefore Red dragon could be classed as a prequel but as Manhunter pre-dates it by almost a decade and half "silence" is a sequel to manhunter.

just because they decide to put Hopkins in it does not invalidate manhunter as the first film about Hannibal Lecktor to be made- it just means someone wanted to make some money.

so please go ahead and trash what i've just written but at the same time answer these questions:

so for clarification on what grounds do you not count silence as a sequel? and would you had been asked that question two years ago would you then have said that MANHUNTER WAS A SEQUEL? if not why not?

If i'm wrong then i'm perfectly prepared to admit it but at the moment no one has come up with a convining argument to suggest that i am? as for the star wars post thats just stupid.

I dispute the fact that Silence of the Lambs is a good film! :p

    Ultimate sequel is undoubtably Aliens.

Hellbound was a cracking follow-up to Hellraiser. Thereafter the sequels in the series became extremely crap.

    Gary,

a film being about some of the same characters at a later date is a necessary condition for it being a sequel, but it is not, IMO, a sufficient condition. To be meaningfully described as a sequel the film would also need to made by some of the same people with a similar sort of philosophy. Would you consider the forthcoming "Return Of The King" movie to be a sequel to the 1978 animated "Lord Of The Rings" film? No. But you could reasonably regard it as a sequel to the FOTR and TT films of this and last year.

Silence of the lamb's and Hannibal are both sequels to manhunter.
Red Dragon is a Remake - neither a sequel or preques as it was a remake of the first of part the trilogy to be released.

Hellbound was good, but not as good as the first and the rest were just pants
