I am buying a set top box on Monday. For the good of anyone looking to buy a new box or are buying a box for the first time, we should look at what boxes are best and how reliable they are in terms of Epg, channel change times and timer record functions etc.

This thread should enlighten and help everyone.

I bought a Philips DTR200/05 from my local Tesco for £39.97. It is one of several Freeview boxes I have owned/installed over several years. It was easy to set up. The response to commands is quicker than many of the units I have come across. It has a 7 day EPG with timer (which I haven't tested yet). It has a digital SPDIF audio output. As I use it with a 4:3 set in the bedroom I was particularly pleased to see that it does not suffer from problems displaying ITV4, E4 etc. On all the other freeviews I've seen these come over with borders on all sides and distorted pictures (due to low bit rates). no problems with the Philips. It has the choice of letterbox, bcompromise or full frame (zoom). It has two SCART sockets. The RF output is straight-through and not modulated for use with non-SCART sets. All in all I'm pleased with it.

The Sony is acknowledged to be the best, but it's not cheap. Argos are selling a Sagem one for £27. We've got two and although basic, we've had no problems with them. On balance the Philips one does sound like a good middle of the road box.

There is a new Phillips in Argos. THe Phillips 210/05. Price is 39.99 I might go for the Phillips box.

I heard somewhere that the scart sockets at the back were too close together?:)

Meaning what?
Due to the construction/shape of a scart socket you can mount them side by side or one on top of the other and you should still be able to fit two leads without them fouling each other.
