Best Program to convert DVD's into .avi's

I'm trying to rip my dvd collection into .avi files to the increase storage space on my HDD. I have been using DVDFab Platinum for this (I think version 5), but have found that the quality isn't great.

Does anyone know of a good program that will convert a movie into a good quality .avi file, but also not make it too big (hoping for a 700mb file size)

Thanks

I use Handbrake to rip DVDs to m4v for my iPod Touch. It does a very good job at quite a low bitrate AND handles subtitles and audio properly. Very classy bit of software.

Without a doubt
AutoGK Homepage - THE tool for XviD / DivX conversion

all you do is copy the DVD to your hard drive (do 10+ at a time) and then you can just cue them up in autogk

I second AutoGK ... timberwolf just beat me to posting it ;)

Its excellent and lets you set to 1CD size (~700MB), I recomment using XviD, AC3 and 2-pass

Once again have been using AutoGK for some time, same as bushbrother - XviD, AC3 + 2-Pass at 700mb - work perfectly on my PS3 and will be using this until I get round to building my HTPC.
