Best Plasma for DVD Playback

Hi - I'm looking to get my first plasma TV and have been impressed by the Panasonic TH37PV500. 99% of the TV's use would be watching films on DVD (via my Pioneer DV-737 dvd player with Denon 5.1 amp and Mission speaker package). For this reason TV reception and onboard sound quality isn't really important for me, and picture quality on DVD playback is paramount. In people's opinions, would the 37PV500 be the best choice, or are there other options I should be considering that might better suit my requirements. Cheers

I reckon that you'd be better off going for the panel version (PW8 I think) of the Panny if you're only going to watch DVD's on it. You'd be paying extra for the tuners, speakers, etc that you wouldn't be using.
I think others on here will probably advise the same.
I have the TH37-PV500B & am very impressed with it in the week that I've owned it so far, but most of my viewing is just normal TV at the moment.

What about considering a panel? Not sure why you chose the 37PV500 but the 42" panels are about the same size overall as the 37PV500.

If HD Ready is what your after then PHD8 might be a better bet but more costly, else try PWD8 if budget dictates but this is an SD screen which some folk here think is excellent as well.

Size - 37 or 42 inch max

Budget - £2000 - £2500. The Panasonic store I saw the 37PV500 in will do it on 12 months 0% credit, which was very tempting.

Wall-mounting is out for me, so Ideally I would be looking for a pedestal/stand mount.

High-definition TV isn't necessarily of much interest to me, but hi-def DVD ready definitely is.

42" PHD8 is the latest HD Ready Panasonic panel. You won't see one in Panasonic shop as they all only sell the Vierra range. If you are anywhere near AV-Sales or another specialist retailer then you should visit and see what other options are available to you.

Your budget opens you up to quite a few options, you should spend some time with these screens to determine which suites you and your eyes.

I seem to be a few minutes behind everyone else today :D

Great advice from everybody - thanks for that! A panel definitely seems the way to go for me, rather than paying for speakers and an internal tuner I'm never going to use. I'll definitely check out AV Sales.

The Brighton Panasonic shop have a 37PV500 on demo playing back a hi-def Panasonic DVD demo disc (not sure what they were using for the dvd playback, some sort of demo only Japansese hi-def DVD player) and I was really impressed with the picture quality, especially when compared to all the other sets in the store that were showing regular SKY broadcasts.
