Of Panasonic, Sony, Philips, Pioneer and JVC which produces best picture quality from a) internal TV tuner b) external video source (S-VHS deck or SKY box)? :lease:

Of these which serves equally well for playing back commercial DVDs? Do any compare well with dedicated DVD players?

    Regards,

    Darren

As in the DVD player market Toshiba (who are not on your list) are ahead by a long way. IMHO the playback of the Toshiba DR1 is comparible almost to a similarly priced Toshiba DVD player.

The JVC and Panasonic range are next up if you have a progressive scan capable monitor/TV (or plan to get one). If not then the Sony is the best with Pioneer second and the others more-or-less equal thereafter.

JVC seems to currently lead on this front. Although internal TV tuners are NEVER high quality!

The Philips would be a bad option for recording from VHS/SVHS as it has no hardware Time Base Corrector (all the others do in one form or another). Other than that they will all create good quality copies from Sky - although again the Philips is at an disadvantage as it has limited recording modes (all the others have Flexible Record or dozens of settings allowing you to maximise quality).
