I am currently looking for a new 42” Plasma Screen, the models I have been looking at are the Panasonic PE50 and the PV500. I will only be watching normal broadcast television, playing PS2 and watching DVD’s (No Sky).

Although I am slighly bothered about hi-def, but for now I am only able to do the above and want the best picture screen for my needs. Would I get a better picture from the PV500 or the PE50?

Also when watching DVD’s, would the picture be substantially better when using a HDMI DVD player and the PV500 than the PE50 through a component connection (as the cost would be a lot higher)

One other thing, I see that John Lewis do a 5 year g'tee on the PE50 thrown in(as this is worth approx £400), does anyone know if they will do the same on the PV500?

    Any help would be appreciated.

I was waiting for the 500 too, but after my experience today i defenitely know
that a HD panel isn't better (sharper) than a ED panel.

Together with 2 friends, we looked for a half our to HD1 (euro1080) on a Pioneer435 vs the Panasonic PE50. A HD panel vs ED panel.

In terms of details and sharpness, THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE! Yeah, maybe if you stick your nose in the screen but from normal viewing distance, non, period.

Having seen neither of those screens, but having demo'd a pw7 and a phd7 at length i found even on sky the difference was noticeable, and with a scaler the phd7 was miles better. Im still waiting for the phd8 :(

JL include a 5 yr guarantee with all TVs so you wont have any problems when the PV500 comes out.

Do JL give a free DVD recorder with the new Vieras, or is it just a from Av-Sales?

I've seen this offer from a number of outlets not just Av-Sales so it could be a Panasonic offer, rather than just the dealer. Having said that, I can't see any reference to the free DVD recorder on JL website, maybe someone could confirm this with John Lewis. Robert Whytes, for example, also offer the free DVD recorder as well as a 5 yr guarantee - www.robertwhyteltd.co.uk

Robert Whyte Limited and probably all other suppliers who offer such a deal!: Just make sure you get the warranty certificate delivered and persist if it does not arrive with you AND take extensive print outs of their websites to prove it was advertised. I say no more.

One other difference is that the 42PE50B is 1068 x 701 x 97, while the 42PV500B is 1138 x 730 x 138 - so considerably larger (due to speakers, I think, as the panel thickness is still only 98).

If you look on the site it says only 1 year on the PE50 page:

    http://www.robertwhyteltd.co.uk/sites/itemview.asp?productx=TH42PE50

Have you rang them up to clarify it?

Have e-mailed them, they have confirmed the 5 year guarantee.

It is £60 delivery and £20 charge for using a credit card.

Did I make it look like that? Yes I have. The law has since changed with regard to items offered FREE and they are now contractually part of you accepting the "offer to purchase". Put it this way, I had a £1500 Philips tv delivered to me from a company in Glasgow 3 years ago and it had a fault on delivery. This TV is still with me with the same fault. I can only but guide you! But my view is anti Philips and anti company in Glasgow.

Essentially, if you buy a tv and the tv turns up, do you remember that you should be getting a 5 year warranty through? I did and chased it after a fortnight and then forgot. When I requested it sometime later, the compnay I was dealing with said that it was for me to prove that it was offered in the first place. I couldn't - I didn't get the warranty.

Many have complained and google searches will show many of these. My reference only to "the company" is that they are known to threaten legal proceedings as well. And the company's name is ......... not for me to say! :hiya:
