Opinions differ. I am very fussy about picture quality and couldn't see a difference - even zooming in.
I opted for S vid, mainly to leave the RGB for other connections.

RGB is supposed to be marginally better, but a lot depends on the circuitry within the equipment.

personally, I think the difference between s-video and rgb is minimal. With rgb though, you do have the ability to pass through the signal when using a recorder, something you can't do with s-video, as far as I know.

it depends how revealing your display is - the bigger and better your screen then the more chance you can see the difference.

Using an amstrad Sk+ box the picture actually gets worse when the RGD option is enabled in the menu. This was also the same with the previuos Amstrad box which was replaced recently due to hard disk problems. The S-video output is the best with the output option set to PAL not RGB. The RGB output has been tested with various SCART cables and is never as good as the RGB output from my Panasonic E55 DVD recorder.
I suggest you look at the Composite video output through the scart with and without the RGB option enabled. Both menmbers of my family can instantly tell the difference if I leave it in RGB mode.
The problem with using the S-video output is that it does not have the widescreen switching signalling present in the scart output although it might be possible to wire this up into a s-video capable scart input.

wow..we have never used the Amstrad boxes but something sounds broken there , RGB versus composite are worlds apart in terms of quality on pretty much any size screen from a portable upwards, so there must be something strange going on in your setup for the quality to be reversed like that...

I watch Sky via S-Video into reciever and then converted up to component but can also watch it via RGB SCART connection through my DVD-R.....can't see any diffference TBH but then both are being "converted" before they get to the TV.

I think which is best will also depend on your TV. I know a couple of years back Toshiba's sets had a reputation for being worse with RGB input than S-Video.

Personally, with my current TV (which is also a Toshiba), there is a slight (but still noticeable) improvement in picture sharpness and colour rendition when using RGB rather than composite. S-Video seems a tad softer than RGB, but it's routed through my S-VHS VCR, so there may be some quality loss there.

RGB from my Pace box to panny plasma is miles better than S-Video.

Bart, by far the best way to get RGB into a panny plasma is by using
    one of these

John at JS tech told me that the best route for rgb into a plasma is via the rgb/vga converter.
    apparently the picture is sharper.....

tempting, but a little rich for me.

I use an IXOS scart, and for me it is better than Svideo.
Composite - I've never even looked at it uuurrrrghhh
