Hi, I want to squeeze the most out of my collection of DVDs. They will be played through a SD CRT so i want to know what the best player out there is. Any recommendations at any price.

Preferably with Component and S-video output.

My denon DVD 1940 gives me a great picture on my Toshiba 32 CRT, I wouldnt over spend on a SD DVD player for a 28 inch CRT

its going to be used on a 36" or 32" CRT. Probably a 36" Tosh or Sony or 32" Loewe. Those Denons get rated well. What outputs do they have. Do you use S-video?

The 1940 has Component,S-Video,RGB Scart and HDMI for Video,as well as 5.1 analogue,Coaxial and Optical for audio.

Im sure britlifter naturally assumed your best tv would be the one listed in your signature. ;)

My Tag Mclaren dvd32flr has s-video out
I use the component outs into a lumagen (setup by Gordon) picture on SD is sublime
Depends what you want to spend, you can pick up older reference player for little money these days (sound should be a step up too)

Good listing of the Denons connections there and yes i did assume the TV was the one in his sig! But even so the Denon will be easily good enough for a 32 or 36 inch CRT. Im really happy with mine on both my 32 CRT and my friends 37 inch Philips LCD

sorry mate, should have made it clearer when i posted.

Thanks for the help guys. Without starting another thread does anyone know what the Xbox 360 is like as a DVD player (the ps3 seems to do an admirable job)? Reason i ask this is that my brother just bought one so i am interested to know if its good or utter tripe. Dont expect it to be as good as the Denon but you guys know more than i do :D.

The Xbox 360 is useless..... Makes too much noise and the picture is not very good imho....

Im currently using it on a 42'' panny pw5 via component.... but you may find the Xbox 360 to be more acceptable on a smaller screen.

As our brother if you could borrow it for a couple of days and see what you think...

The XBox 360 is the worst DVD player I've ever seen. DVD support is absolutely minimal on it.

thanks. That answers my question rather nicely :D. Have since tested it and the PS3 player seems to kick it in every way.

I know you said you want a good SD DVD player but would you ever be plugging it into your soon to be arriving 37PX70? If so why not take a look at the Tosh EP30? Great as an SD DVD player, great at upscaling, cheaper than the Denon, plays HD movies and comes with 7 free ones.... just a thought.
