    Hi

What dvd do you think has the best looking menu/interface system?

I think the interface when animated adds alot to the value and appreciation of a dvd. Of course it helps the film to be a good 'un.

My choice at the moment is Planent of the Apes (new).

I actually prefer a nice static menu. Once the initial viewing of an animated menu is over and done with, it rapidly becomes a pain in the arse to sit through time and time again. For me anyway.

A good example would be the menu system for the Korn "Deuce" DVD (not mine btw all you nu-metal haters). Although the menu's made up of dozens of amazing "scary" haunted asylum-themed animated screens, with about 5 or 6 different bits to select on each screen and no play all function at all  , it's got 50+ things that you need to find before you can select and watch them, only to be presented with footage that sometimes lasts as long as a whole 10 seconds, and never lasts longer than about 2 minutes. Searching for, watching, and then trying to find the next bit took about 3 hours in total. It's like a whole disc that's an easter egg hunt. I wouldn't be bothered if I never saw another animated menu again. They looked and sounded really good, but having to navigate through them was a nightmare. Unfortunately, the "rewards" of videos, footage etc of Korn made the whole thing a big waste of time. The worst thing is that it wasn't my disc and the owner said they were highly unlikely to ever watch it again due to the amount of time you have to dedicate to such a small reward for your efforts. Definately a case of animated menu's taken to an unwelcome extreme.

If I was pushed though, I'd probably say that The Phantom Menace had really well put together animated menu's. From Hell's were good too. On the whole though, I personally feel a menu is something that's better left basic.

I guess that makes me a miserable git:p

Simple ones would do me IE click ok on dts logo and it plays with the DTS track :)

I prefer to look at any extra's after watching the film and if the film turns out to be pants then I dont bother with the extra's.

Galaxy Quest and The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. I mainly like the fact that you are unable to activate the Omega 13 option until you have watched the film. The Mummy films are so interactive and have loads of options. These have to be my favourites in my collection.

You guys who like simple menus definitely wouldn't like the MEMENTO Special Edition - you need a phd in psychology just to watch the film! :D

I hate static menus. For me static = cheap and nasty! :)

    Some of my faves are:

    Se7en (r1)
    Fight Club (r1)
    Godfather Trilogy
    Gladiator
    Aliens
    T2
    Hannibal
    The Phanotm Menace
    The Abyss
    All of the VISTA series
    Memento Special Edition
Final Fantasy: the pants plot within

Memento special ed was good first few times, but is annoying now. I printed out the booklet from the Web so I don't have to keep remembering the route through to the various special features

Best menu for me is Shrek. Apparently, they're making it even better on the soon-to-be-released 3-disk version :(

I liked the Cast Away and Gladiator menus too.

Donnie Darko's were good for being animated but without being cumbersome.

Final Destination's were good too.. .but first time round I was unsure as to whether the film had started or not

Anyone else feel that sometimes the animated menus ruin some of the plot? (e.g. Final Destination's interludes between sub-menus)

    Hi,

Yes, i hate when they run film clips behind the menu, and show action sequences.

    Lex,

I can't believe you had trouble watching Memento when you have had no problem with more complex films (from what I've read of your posts and the help you gave me with AI).

I can believe you had trouble with the Memento menus though because most people do. They are not very well explained and user interface experts will tell you they're very badly designed (and I would agree with them).

    ;)
