I'm not really a fan of live albums but I have just finished listening to Jann Arden's Live With the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra album and it's breathtakingly good

Not only do we have new orchestral arrangements of her songs, but she also tells some great anecdotes in between the tracks, mainly involving her parents. Seriously funny stuff

Anyone who enjoys mellow female vocalists, should check this out :)

So, what are you favourite live albums? :smoke:

Nils Lofrgren - Acoustic live saw him at Redcar Coatham Bowl with his band and at Middlesbrough doing this very same set, getting the album home and finaly playing it, took me right back to that night.

Can I include DVDs 'cos then it would be Rodger Waters- In the Flesh, not the loudest or most spectacular but definitely the most riveting live concert, this matches the real event....magic.

By the way SG Im ashamed at you starting a favourite type thread and at me , for posting. Was it just the new smileys? :smashin: :rotfl:  :smoke:  :lesson:

I have amongst my collection of CD's and Vinyl -

U2 - Live under a blood red sky. - 20 years old and still sounds great:)
Queen - live killers - ok, Brighton rock is the track to listen too.
Queen - live magic - rubbish!!
Brian May - live at Brixton Academy, quite good considering his voice isn't the stongest
Guns 'n' Roses - live era '87-'93, which isn't too bad.

In general I find live albums a bit of a let down, never as good as being there, this particularly applies to Queen, my favourite band, whose live albums I really only own to complete the back catalogue. (live killers excepted, being the 2nd album I ever puchased, 24 years ago:eek:

    In a Nick-Hornby-style, 5 great live albums....

    Bob Dylan -- Live 1966
Dylan abandons folk and goes electric. Slow hand-clapping and catcalls follow from the audience. Dylan plays on...you can hear the contempt in his voice. Total confrontation but it is history captured.

    Neil Young -- Weld
Recorded during the Gulf War and it sounds like it. Incendiary and very loud.

    Television -- The Blow Up
    Just for the guitar riffs.

Nirvana -- Unplugged In New York
Their best album, IMO. Proof positive that they were more than just a 'grunge' band.

The Velvet Underground -- 1969 Live

Other faves include The Clash's 'From Here To Eternity', the first CD of Springsteens' Live 1975 set, the New Order 'Retro-Live', Radiohead's 'I Might Be Wrong' and Talking Heads' 'Stop Making Sense' (although you should really be watching the DVD)

Live albums are usually not much cop, usually dug-out to fulfil record contracts. That's the why the good ones are oh so special.

    -- Barry.

I've not got many live albums. I agree with thamesider that Live Magic is not very good.

However, Alchemy, Dire straits is pretty darn good :)

    Kiss - Alive!

Without doubt the finest live album ever recorded, although Kiss Alive II comes close ;)

I don't have any live albums because I'm not keen, but in it's time I thought Alchemy was fantastic :)

[Look now, this sort of thing just won't stand here- no slagging Incubus off Sarge or else... Gambit:lesson: ]

I remember Alchemy being exciting. And playing the vinyl until it was worn out. The joy of the 80's.

Can we count video? U2's Popmart tour vid. Love it, love it, love it.

Showing my age here but it used to be "Paris" by Supertramp. Recently though, I love Paul Weller's "Days of Speed" live acoustic album. :smashin:

Agree with Hell Freezes over too. I've got teh DVD, keep menaing to get teh DTS CD. Eagles are one of the two artists I've seen in concert, teh other being Meatloaf. One track from the everything louder tour (which was kind of a mix of BOOH1 & 2 was Life is a lemon and I want my money back. Stretches any sub that I've heard!

And I defy anyone to find me a better 'live in concert' album cover photo than the one on the inside of the gatefold sleeve of Kiss Alive II... you can practically feel the heat of the fireballs

    ac/dc if you wany blood........

most other live albums i`ve heard are nowhere near live, and have been dabbled with so much they might as well be studio albums.

i still have a soft spot for deep purple made in japan:)

    Underworld - Everything Everything.

Sooooooooo much better than their studio albums and a decent feeling of 'being there' with the 5.1 mix.

Er, you better not dig too deep in to how Kiss Alive! and Kiss Alive II were made then

That said, I doubt there's a single 'live' album that is truly live.

When I was a metal kid I loved Iron Maiden's Live After Death album. Excellent renditions of their music, although I couldn't listen to it now. Not even for nostalgia.

I forgot Earth Inferno by Fields of the Nephilim. Ace if you like that kind of thing.

yeah, you are right about the kiss albums, but i grew up with them, and they are great albums, even though i am contradicting myself.
i included if you want blood because that to me has the most live sound of any official album that has been released by a band.

Same here. I've somehow ended up with about 5 slightly differing copies of the double vinyl Kiss Alive II (the one with the tattoos is class!) and was lucky enough to get hold of the red vinyl Kiss Alive! version which now sells for £250+.

Although I have them both on CD, it doesn't seem right somehow.
Kiss Alive IV is still on the cards and might feature some cool songs not yet available 'live' (officially anyway).
