Best LCD resolution

Want to buy a new HD LCD TV for my Xbox 360 and want to know what is the best resolution size to go for.

Basically is 1366 x 768 better than 1280 x 720?

No, for the 360, 1280 x 720 would be the better of the two resolutions as it is exactly 720p, wheras 1366 x 768 would result in some stretching. However if you were to link a PC up to it, 1366 x 768 would be the better of the two!

agreed the closer to the native res of most games ie 720p is better but most tv's that are 1280X768 are 15:9 instead of 16:9 so you will have slightly bigger bars when watching dvd's, but there is very little dfference with either

Yip - it's got to be 720p !

And i suggest you get hold of the Samsung LE32R41BD - stunning with a 360 connected.. you'll be wanting a Media Center install too ;)

although if you use a VGA cable with the 360 isnt one of the resolutions available 1360 x 768 making it the better option? Suppose it depends if you want to use component or VGA, more choices :)

Its still scaled by the 360 rather than the screen :)

If I could get Media Center to work!

I have the wired network option, router etc. Xbox and PC work fine together, installed Media Center and my PC ain't detecting my 360. Have looked at MS FAQ's and theres no reason why it shouldn't work.

I had a problem like that too - To fix it, i ended up removing all connected computers in the 360 dashboard... rebooted it. Switch off your console and grab your media remote - just hit the media center button then it'll come up saying no media center pc's connected..follow the prompts and you should be good. Did your PC authorise your 360 using the Key from your console ?

Just a quick question now your on the topic of vga resolutions. Using a standard monitor (17" 4:3) that supports both 1280x720 and 1366 x 768 which is the best to use. I'm not sure of the native resolution of the monitor but it'll be a 4:3 resolution like 1024x768 or 1282x1024. Assuming i don't want to use a 4:3 resolution which would be the best of the two 1280 or 1366???

So are you saying the VGA lead can be no better than the component then ?

I've been thinking about how to upgrade to HDTV for some time, and was looking at this TV as it's now very affordable, with some great price reductions i've seen around

However, i'm now totally confused, coz the above quotes seems to contradict each other... all the stats i've seen for this TV say it's resolution is 1366x768

Which you all agree is a bad screen resolution for xbox360 and 720p - so is this TV no good then or what

1280x720, as it is the widescreen version of (most) 17" LCDs (1280x1024)

It will pixel match with every chain of the 360's output

Before someone comes back with a smartass coment about using your eyes  , IMO it is hard to see the difference
unless you've got two screens next to each other.

After playing round with a few resolutions on my pc monitor i found that 1366 x 768 looked better than 1280x720 despite the fact the scaling has taken place. This is what i'm sticking with for now.

There are very few 1280x720 native TVs. It is all about which part has the best scaler.

Example:

You could feed the screen 720p (component) or 1280x720 (VGA) which are effectively the same res.

The screen has to scale it to 1366x768.

OR

You could feed the screen 1360x768 (I think) and little or no scaling will be used, so the signal from the 360 to the screen will be pixel matched (i.e. a display pixel for each and every pixel in the signal).
However the 360 still has to scale this from 1280x720 (which is what the graphics part renders at) to 1360x768. Its all about which scales better, which is all down to the screen. You really have to try it and see.

I would imagine 720p by component would be the best, because the TV is designed to take 720p and do a good job with it, but it may not do as good a job as the 360!

microsoft are recommending a 1366 x 768 Resolution

Microsoft have announced that Samsung 26" LCD TV ( LE26R41B ) is the best model to get fast 12 millisecond pixel switching speed which will enable intense action while overcoming any motion artifacts. In addition, the Fixed Pixel Device eliminates scan lines, further ensuring gameplay is smooth and flicker-free.
