After the purchase of some new home cinema kit I'm looking to get a setup disc to get the sound and picture quality as good as I can. What's the best setup DVD to use? I've seen 'Ultimate DVD Platinum' and 'Video Essentials' available to buy - should I get one of these or are there others available? If anyone is looking to sell a secondhand disc please get in touch.

    Regards

    Rob

Got the AVIA disc myself. Excellent setup disc, bought it direct from the above mentioned site. A truly useful setup tool.

Is that Avia disk R1 only? Region 0 would make sense for a disk like that, but can't find anything on the website.

The AVIA disc is Region 0. Works on all players. But its NTSC format not PAL so make sure your TV supports it (most do nowadays).

    cheers

Thanks for that. But...does video optimisation in NTSC mode actually benefit PAL playback?

To be honest both look excellent despite the tv being calibrated for NTSC. I´ve never thought that the PAL discs look any worse than the NTSC ones.

I think the Ultimate DVD Platinum is PAL if you wanted to do both correctly (providing your TV/Projector can store different settings).

Worth a shot then. A couple of years ago someone lent me Video Essentials and it amazed me how the sound tests could move a fuzzy noise between the speakers with pin-point accuracy!

The only drawback with AVIA & Video Essentials is that they are for 5.1 systems, theres no test tones etc for an EX/ES system.

I would imagine this would be rectified with AVIA 2 or Video Essentials 2 though, if & when they are released!!

I've bought "sound & vision home theater tune-up" also by ovation software (The AVIA software co.)
This has 6.1 set-up tones & everything else you could poss. want.

I bought both discs from the U.S. amazon.com site & they arrived within three days! Add tax at about £15 the pair.

I was shown the way by Gordon of Convergent (see top banner) & now I am walking the path of correct calibration. I found that the projector setting previously done with the internal test cards were only slightly differant, but the 10% change made a substantial improvment. The audio set-up with a SPL meter made a massive change to the sound placement & quality of the film soundtrack, guess i'm paying the price of standing too close to the speakers at clubs & my hearing is impaired. (no comments about other causes pls.)

I am based in Dublin and also purchased this disk from Amazon in the US.

I did not get stuck for tax as I selected the lowest cost delivery option and the items in question were actually posted from within the EU (delivery took two weeks).
If you are buying from outside the EU and you select courier delivery you will be charged VAT as the courier is onliged to declare the goods. If you use Airmail the chances of being charged VAT are very low.

Regarding the disk ... it is really worth getting, even if you have to pay VAT.
