hi, I work as an editor/cameraman using mini dv and final cut pro/g4 ,
dvd is seeming much more popular with my clients and I am considering buying a recorder as it would be a major time saving device for me for basic jobs that wouldnt require the hassle of computer based authoring.

Can anyone recommend models to look for up to 500 pounds?

1 picture quality is important as well as dvd-r compatability.
    2 firewire input/output
3 basic editing , do any machines allow you to insert chapter markers anywhere you like, before burning to dvd-r? seems to me that most only put them in random.
4 do any machines allow you to add your own menu designs? stitch separate recordings together with possibly basic fades/titles onto the hdd drive then burn to dvd-r?
also can you export thru firewire back from the hdd or dvd drive into a computer?

    many thanks
    ade
