Hi there people im heading into the land of HCPS's for the first having my own desktop pc's for many years now.

First of all is there any main diffrence between desktop cases and HCPS cases that i should know about, can i just stick a normal mobo in there and away i go ?

And now for my main question, i understand beauty is in the eye of the beholder but in your opinion what is the best looking HCPC case to go for ? it will mainly be placed in my AV rack and so must look expensive as it will be sitting along side my kit, so i dont want it to have tacky plastic and usb/firewire ports sticking out the front.

    Cheers for any help.

Regarding case sizes, be aware that some of the smaller cases require mATX (micro ATX) rather than an ATX.

The top pick currently is the Claritas here

It looks fab but isn't cheap. Also I don't believe a PSU is included either.... The choice is yours...

Take a look at the Shuttle cases. Some of them are not very sleek, but I have the SS56L, which has nice front panels to hide sockets and the DVD drive.

I've just bought a coolermaster Cavilier 4 - when I got it in the post it was a little
bigger than I thought it would be, but it looks fabulous next to AV amp!!
Also Silverstone products seem to be very popular.

Main difference is that many HTPC case include a display and IR sensor as part of the case. This allows things like track info etc to be shown as well as using a remote control.

Also as HTPCs are supposed to be quiet, most HTPC cases have a bit more consideration towards cooling.

Going for the Silverston LC10m personally

One 80mm intake fan and 2x60mm exhaust fans.
The case fans are nice and quiet, but I need a MUCH quieter way to cool my Athlon
    64 3200 CPU - any ideas?

You can't go wrong with the Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU cooler assuming your board is on the compatibility list

BTW, so the fans are quiet. What about the PSU - how much noise does that make?

    Cheers

Its an Coolermaster ATCS-500 aluminium low-profile case.
