This topic has probably arisen many times before but what are people's favourite games ever? Also put what your single best game ever is. Mine are as follows:

BEST GAME EVER: NiGHTS Into Dreams (Saturn)

    Rez (Dreamcast/PS2)
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GameCube)
    Halo (Xbox)
    Project Gotham Racing 2 (Xbox)
    Soul Calibur (Dreamcast)
    Shenmue (Dreamcast)
    Jet Set Radio (Dreamcast)
    Space Channel 5 (Dreamcast)
    Fighters Megamix (Saturn)
    Burning Rangers (Saturn)
    Sonic The Hedgehog (MD)
    Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (MD)
    Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (MD)
    Sonic & Knuckles (MD)
    Pokemon Yellow (GBC)
    Virtua Tennis (Dreamcast)

I think it's worth noting that with the exception of Halo and PGR2, all of these games are Japanese.

Gran Turismo 2 is (until GT4 finally appears) still the most comprehensive racing game ever.

    But does comprehensive mean good?

IMO the best racing game ever is 'Mario Kart' on the SNES.

It is very difficult to choose the best game. One can only go by genres.

The game that has absorbed me the most, out of any other game would have to be 'Shenmue' on Dreamcast.

Couldn't do anything else but live that game for weeks. Absolutely incredible game!

GT2 is actually a better game than GT3 if you play the 1 player game. GT3 is less comprehensive but better for a good 2 player race & it obviously has better graphics.

My fave games over the ages are, in no particular order along with which machines had my fave versions :-

    Winning Eleven 8 (PS2)
    Gradius V (PS2)
    R-Type (ARCADE/PS1)
    Shenmue 1 & 2 (DREAMCAST)
    Afterburner (PS2/ARCADE)
    Outrun (PS2/ARCADE)
    StreetFighterII (ARCADE/SNES)
    Bomberman (ARCADE/SNES/MD)
    Gauntlet (ARCADE/MD)
    Gran Turismo 3 (PS2)
Legend of Zelda - The Ocarina of Time (N64)
    Mario Kart (SNES)
    Goldeneye (N64)
    Laser Squad (SPECTRUM/AMIGA)
    Sega Rally (ARCADE/SATURN)
    Daytona USA (ARCADE/DREAMCAST)
    Panzer Dragoon Saga (SATURN)
    Virtua Fighter 4 Evo (PS2)
    Wipeout 2097 (PS1)
    Radiant Silvergun (SATURN)
    Ghouls & Ghosts (ARCADE/MD)

That is what I'm driving (no pun intended) at. Staggering competition choice and to the best of my knowledge no other game had suffucient variety to include a 38bhp Subaru 360 and a 940bhp Suzuki hillclimber. Underneath the now elderly graphics, the inertia engine is the same as GT3 anyway.

GG has a point about mario kart but for multiplayer racing silliness, 8 player Micromachines on the PS1 (with beer on) took some beating.

I almost forgot..........Grim Fandango! I think it is one of the best made games ever in terms of graphical style, sound, music, story and scriptwriting. A complete blast from start to finish.

    Elite.

THE best game ever. The fact it could randomly generate believable galaxies in 38k of active memory (in a CBM64) was a stunning feat.

    Often copied, never bettered.

Hey, good to see some hardcore SEGA fans here.

I dig most sega games, but have to agree that there is something very special about NIGHTS and the saturn version of SEGA RALLY. The x factor that caused you to play it again and again, just to get better.

    Genius.

    Cap :)

Yeah Match Day 2 was a good game - kind of like the FIFA of the Speccy days. Personally though I felt that the more realistic Emlyn Hughes Soccer (the PES of the Speccy days) was the better game.

I must say though that the Speccy was a superb computer and me & my mates spent many an hour on it. My Personal faves from the Speccy days were...

    - Target Renegade
    - Laser Squad
    - Vulcan - CSS wargame
    - Jetpac
    - Manic Miner
    - Bloodwych
    - The Fury
    - Rex
    - Stunt Car Racer
    - Carrier Command
    - Emlyn Hughes Soccer
    - BMX Simulator
    - Super Sprint & Championship Sprint
    - Skool Daze & Back 2 Skool
    - Elite
    - Silkworm
    - Cyclone
    - Tornado
    - Stock Car Racing
    - Star Glider
    - Buggy Boy

There the ones that I remember enjoying the most - great gaming days!!

Let's change the tune a bit. How about the best console/games platform ever? I am going to do the ones I've owned/played on extensively in rank order...

    1) Dreamcast
    2) Saturn
    3) PC
    4) Mega Drive
    5) Amiga 600HD
    6) GameCube
    7) Xbox
    8) Game Boy Color
    9) Master System
    10) Game Boy Advance SP
    11) Amstrad CPC 6128
    12) PlayStation
    13) PlayStation 2

BTW, this isn't a complete generalisation based on every game on every platform. This list is based on the amount of personal enjoyment I have had from the gaming platforms in question from the games I have played.

There's already a Sticky thread dedicated to what you think the best console is. This stops other threads being filled with silly arguments. Does anyone really care which platform either me or you have had the most fun playing? Let's just stick to discussing games and keep this thread on topic.

hehe - my mate had a cpc464 and to be honest I thought it was pretty decent. I had a speccy +3 at the time and the amstrad was better graphically.

Anyway regarding the topic of best games EVER, how about the senarios below:

    1) If you were stuck alone on a desert island with A/C power, but sadly no internet connection, what game would you like to have with you (only 1 game allowed)?

    2) If you were stuck alone on a desert island with A/C power and a broadband internet connection, what game would you like to have with you (only 1 game allowed)?

    3) If you were stuck on a desert island with a mate ,A/C power, but sadly no internet connection, what game would you like to have with you (only 1 game allowed)?

So really what i'm asking is what is your fave single player game, fave online game & fave 2 player game.

    Mine would be

    1) Winning Eleven 8
    2) Counterstrike
    3) Winning Eleven 8

On the subject of the CPC 6128, I can't remember that much about it as my Dad sold it years ago. I do remember that it was the first games platform I ever owned (I was about 4) so some of the first games I played were Knight Lore, Jet Set Willy and this weird multiple choice quiz game featuring a dragon. Classic stuff!

Single Player Game: Project Gotham 2
    Online Game: Project Gotham 2
Multi Player Game: Pro Evo 3(till 4 comes outs)

And as for the 6128, all i can remember about it was Nigel Mansells Grand Prix and some wierd top-down 2d racer which was class, oh and the discs were double sided for some obscure reason. I think it also came with a massive manual that had some sort of programming code in it that allowed you to type in your own games from the book, if that makes any sense.
