If you can stretch your budget a bit more you could get the Arcam DV78 for around £700 which is very good at CD replay. Another option would be to get a cheap DVD player like the Toshiba SD240 or the Pioneer 575 and purchase an entry level dedicated cd player like the Rotel RCD02 or the Arcam CD73.

    Get a Pioneer 565 for DVD (£120)

and a Rotel RC-03, NAD 542, or Arcam CD 73 for CD (around £350-£400)

If you insist on one-box; Pioneer 757, Denon 2900 or (used) Arcam 78.

Personally, I use a Pioneer 565 for DVD (paid £150) and run it into a Tag DAC20 (paid £285 used) for CD, with fabulous results.

If you only want one unit, the Arcam DV88+ from Creative Audio at £499 (was £1K) is hard to beat. Supposed to be the best DVD for CD play under £1k. The DV78 is essentially the same performance wise, but is replacing the DV88+ as it is cheaper to make.

    See it here:

If you can wait a little while, the new mid-level Denon looks very good, if not the Rotel 1050 isnt that bad either.
