Decided to watch Blade Runner today, and was quit shocked at how poor the quality is on the 1999 Dvd edition that I have. It doesn't even have surround sound . There seems to be various Blu-Ray editions out there, but on Amazon at least, the reviews cover all editions, and I haven't got the time to scour through them to find out which is best. So I thought I'd ask you fine people. If there's one place I'll get a good answer, it's here.

So, which Blu-Ray edition has the best picture, sound, and special features?

Edit: Price is important. I can't justify spending silly money on it. The 5-Disc Collectors Edition is over £40 on Amazon, so that's just not going to happen.

I have the UK 2-Disc Final Cut. Great picture, great sound, and Dangerous Days doc on second disc. Picked it up for £6 new.

Thanks man. I did see that edition on eBay for just under £7, so I'll give it a try.

You cant go wrong with any BR edition on blu but if youre a fan you might want the 30th anniversary edition for instance.

If you're a big fan and can stretch to £20 then get the 30th Anniversary Edition. Same content as the old five disc release, just on three BDs instead of three BDs and two DVDs. The workprint audio is also lossless as opposed to the old lossy track, and the codec is AVC instead of VC-1.

If you aren't that fussed, the Final Cut is very cheap and includes the long 'Dangerous Days' doc.

And Jim, it's BD dammit! ;)

I didn't know that the new release had a lossless audio transfer for the workprint, cheers for that as it my favourite version overall.

Favourite version? You know its got the worst PQ right? Its certainly interesting to Blade Runner freaks (ahem ;-)) but is certainly not the best one to watch of the 5.

If it's his favourite version of the film then surely it's the best version regardless of the audio-visual quality?

I didn't say it was the best or it was the version I watch the most of the time, it's just the one I enjoy the most.

You can pick up the US 5-Disc Collectors Edition for little monies if you are lucky & patient, got mine for £15 on the bay & the blu ray discs now sit in my nice 5 DVD tin set.

I also had no idea the workprint audio had a lossless version on the 30th Anniversary Edition thank you for that info (starts to pounder yet another buy damn it)..

ps 'Dangerous Days' doc is that also a lossless version?

Amazon.com: Blade Runner (30th Anniversary Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]: Harrison Ford, Ridley Scott: Movies & TV
the one above is the US Digibook 30th edition - works out at under £13 shipped to the UK and has the three Blu's in the set as described above by a few peeps. I have this and its a lovely set with a nice booklet as well as the three discs. The booklet is half of the booklet that came in the bigger 30th anniv set with the toy spinner etc. For less than £13 delivered its one of the nicest complete collections for a film you can get, never mind this classic anyway. I think its well worth the extra cost over the standard 2 disc BR here in the UK :)

Okey doke no problem, maybe I came across a bit harsh there! I don't really understand why anyone would think the workprint cut was the most enjoyable but each to their own.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys. It's much appreciated :)

I'm not a 'fan-boy' of the movie, but I do love it. I went ahead and bought the 2 Disc Final Cut edition for £7, so I'm hoping it doesn't disappoint. It certainly can't be any worse than the Directors Cut 1999 Dvd i have.

That's the way it should be, but I've seen too many ropey Blu-Ray transfers of older movies to warrant a blind purchase of Blade Runner.

The Final Cut is lossless on all versions, it's just the others that were lossy. The workprint gets a theoretical 'upgrade' to lossless on the 30th Anniversary set, but I doubt many people will notice the difference. Same goes for the change from VC-1 to AVC. We're talking technical improvements rather than any perceivable ones.

You wont be disappointed with Blade Runner trust me! Its an 'old' transfer now but its still up there near the best of them.

And the film is rather good too of course...my favourite of all time and has been for at least 20 years now!

I'd say the vast majority of older films look great on Blu-ray and genuinely ropey transfers tend to be the exception rather than the rule. Even many "ropey" transfers still look far superior to the scratchy, faded prints that used to get shown at repertory cinemas and on the telly.

The 5 disc set is still one of my favourites and it doesn't help being one of my favourite films/film soundtrack. I think it was only £13 too.

I watch the theatrical cut just as much as the final cut as it was that version that got me hooked in the first place.

BR is one of the films I have had many versions over the years. I currently still have the old R2 DVD, R1 Directors Cut, 5 disc Tin DVD set and the 5 disc Blu Ray.

Tell me about it! Though id go with the International cut over the Theatrical cut every time even though its just a few seconds extra.

There are many versions of the soundtrack out there...just saying ;-)

Yep, UK Amazon accounts are fine. This is the version I have and bought it from the States. I have just checked for you, and it is region free too.

Many thanks for that, rulocal, I really appreciate it. :smashin:

May I ask how long your purchase took to get to you?
