So it's almost the end of another year, a year which has proved to be a good one for us DVD enthusiasts. Prices have taken a huge dip this year, with brand new dvd's now retailing for about £13 online and the region 3 market has taken a huge step forward as a viable competitor to regions 1 and 2.

2005 will probably see further reductions, but may also see us saying goodbye to a few dvd suppliers, especially dvdsoon who are re-introducing shipping charges which is probably the only reason anyone accepted their delivery delays.

But putting all that aside; this year, which online retailer has proved the best in terms of price, reliability, special offers, quickness of delivery, customer service, that's right - the whole shebang? Who is the number 1 e-tailer of 2004?

Ive only really used DVD Planet. (US Region 1 only) Any Japanese region 2 DVDs I buy where I live.

DVD planet has been good to me so far. Good prices and they were kind enough to send me another copy of a DVD that arrived scrached in the box. (the disk had come loose inside)
They didnt charge me anything for the new copy, and they didnt ask me to send the damaged one back!

In terms of RRP the prices have not gone down some are now £24.99 or higher!

However the actual price in the online stores seems to be constantly dropping not only for new releases but for just about every DVD. That includes Disney DVds who usually price fix by limiting their stock and letting them go out of print after a certain amount of time!

It's a no-brainer for me, I voted for CD wow as they are constantly excellent in every area especially price and customer service. :D

Movietyme Gary for number 1 e-tailer of 2004 ....don't make me laugh :rotfl:

those two were both in my original list but the list was in my head which is a flawed place to store lists.. if any mods would like to add those two to the list, that would be cool.:)

Movietyme is my current favourite, reasonable prices and fast delivery.

I think The Disc Emporium are very good for customer service but unfortunately prices are a little higher on select titles.

    CD Wow are also great.

1st = Dvdpacific for me even with the secruity problems. (i got hit along with a lot of other people) They are cheap and with fast delivery and they stock all those odd horror and anime titles i love.
2nd = Cdwow - great service and cheap prices - only down points are very limited selection of titles and they keep running out of stock so you have to wait longer to get the dvds you wanted.

CD-Wow, no one comes close as far as customer service is concerned, the delivery is top notch, and the prices are excellent..some are the same as most other sites, but most are cheaper if you order early enough..and if it changes, just cancel and re-order. The vouchers are a good loyalty touch too.

further to a couple of posts (one sarcastic, but still.. ) a small clarification, whereas i left out a few sites including movietyme through oversight, i actually left out splash and dvdpacific on purpose on this poll, as due to the legal problems encountered by both sites, i did not think it was just to include them in this poll as many people are still out of pocket due to these problems. If you want to vote for splash or dvdpacific then i think it is better to leave them listed as "other" rather than give them their own vote, but i will leave it up to the moderators to add/remove poll items at their own discretion.

    Hi marc,

I think this may be aimed at my vote for Splash :) It was semi sarcastic as i honestly had no trouble with them whatsoever i.e great prices and fast delivery obviously(bearing in mind what happened to them) i must have been the exception to the rule so to speak.

I've had a few things from CD wow this year and as usual they have been great - until i wanted to order "OLDBOY" (R3) - i couldn't find it on their site so i gave them a bell only to be told:

ME: "i want to order a copy of OLDBOY but i cant find it on your site"
CD WOW: "were not listing it as we are not sure that people will want to buy it"
ME: "well i want to buy it"
CD WOW: "i'm sorry sir, but were going to order it just for you"
ME: "well if you put it on the web site people may want to order it"
CD WOW: yes sir, but we dont know that so we wont be stocking it"
ME: "ha ha ha ha ha" - slowly putting the phone down

www.loaded247.co.uk prices and delivery are good considering they ship from abroad to the UK then onto the customer to avoid duties

DVD.co.uk have been cheap for R2 this year (eg ROTK EE at £18) and have taken alot of my business away from Play.com. I'd like to award a gold star for service to Cd-wow as I had to return a disk and they were excellent.

For the handful of R1 disks I've bought, I've not really been able to look beyond DVDsoon, I can forgive the delivery delays at their prices.

ditto really, i never had any problems, and my last order was shipped about a week before they went under, but i know full well that a company is aware it's going under quite a while before it happens, so there is no excuse for them continuing to take orders up to the day before it happens, i can only assume they did it on purpose to offset some of their debt, knowing full well they'd never have to refund anyone.

Cd-wow for me. The way they've recovered from the legal wrangles
involving the BPI and still remain one of the cheapest, most reliable, customs
friendly overseas sites is testement to the way they are managed.
Their customer service is second to none imo.

Voted for movietyme on the basis that I think they are the best all rounder with the best catalog and they always stock more obscure/collectable titles- where else could you of got the freaks and geeks set exclusive to americans.

Dvd soon would have got my vote but I got messed around by them a lot this year. Botched refunds, wating 4 months on bubba ho-tep, now they've got free delivery, now they don't etc.. plus having used their return policy for the first time I really understand the value of customer service.

For mainstream titles and cheapness I would have gone with cd-wow but too many times this year they just haven't stocked the discs I wanted.

I'm sorry its a dvd of a film that won this years Palm D'or, it was on current cinema release at UK cinemas - surely it cant be that wrong to expect a DVD retailer based in asia to have it!

and maybe they have it know because of phone calls (added to which on e of the retailers in this poll has told me that version of OLDBOY is no longer in print.

I'm sure your phone-calls helped the process in getting the DVD on the site but you can hardly expect them to make an order after just one person asks for a particular DVD.

It's no longer in print? I thought it was a pre-order?
