Hi All

I'm a newbie and am hoping that you can help me with my quest for a new DVD Recorder!

The features I'm after are:

DVD Recorder with VHS player/recorder (so I can transfer old videos onto DVDs)
Hard Drive (ideally 160gb or 250gb) - although could live without this
Freeview built in
USB port - is it possible to play movies that I have downloaded and put on the USB pen/external hard drive through the DVD recorder?

Your help is greatly appreciated as I don't know where to start!

you are unlikely to get all those features in a hdd recorder and so you are probably best to make a compromise

1) look at something like the sony 970b as a hdd/dvd recorder with built in freeview

2) use a cheap vcr to link into it using scart for tape playback or for transferring tapes onto the hdd or dvd

3) the sony970b will play divx from dvdr or dvdrw disks so that is probably your best bet , it will also play mp3 and jpegs from a usb stick too

I assume you already have a vcr so something like the sony is ideal for you

Hi Ramjet

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly!

Would I be able to transfer movies of a USB pen onto the DVD recorder's HDD?

Think this may well be the one to go for!

no m8

I tried this after reading your post , and you cannot even watch movies on a pen drive , just play mp3 and jpegs on a usb memory stick

you cannot transfer the divx from dvdr or dvdrw to hdd either , but you can watch them from dvdr or dvdrw

you can transfer mp3 and jpegs to the hdd though
