Hi, I am just about to buy my first digital camera. I have about £250 to spend, and was wondering if people could point me in the direction of some decent cameras for this pricepoint?? All help would be most appreciated, as I do not know much about the digital cameras on the market. Cheers

Can i ask what you want mate? Do you want something that's compact, or would you like something with a bigger zoom lens. Most comapacts are about 3x optical zoom. Bigger cameras are round 10x zoom. Do you want some manual as well as auto features so you can try them out when u become more advanced?

    Round your price range:

You'd be more then happy with any of the above. for indepth reviews and sample pics of all the above go to http://www.steves-digicams.com/

Hi, I was looking for a compact type camera, not the SLR type ones. Also, advanced features would be great too, as I can use these when I am more advanced. i checked out your choices, is the S50 the same as the S500? If not, any major differences?? Also, is the Sony W1 any good? Cheers

The S50 has more manual features then the 500. I would go for the S50 out of the 3. I like to stick to dedicated camera makers myself, though i have heard good things about the sony, i dont like the pro sticks sony use either. The 500 is smaller then the S50 but not by much and it has greater scope . http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/s50.html (shown in black)

    500 http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/s500.html

    sony http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/w1.html

You'd be more then happy with the 3 above cams. Personally i would take the S50

I have the Canon S60 which is the successor to the S50. It has full manual controls and is reasonably compact - i'm a big fan so far.

The S500 is much more compact but doesn't have full manual controls - i think you have some basic control over iso speed and exposure but not much more - check some online reviews for a definitive answer.

The Sony DSC-W1 is Sony's competitor to the S500 - some review sites claim that Canon has the edge in terms of the image processing software inside the camera though i doubt the average consumer would notice the difference. I guess the DSC-V1 is the closest competitor to the S60 though it is bigger and more of a "pro" camera.

The review sites mentioned earlier in this thread will give you much more info than we can. They're all good cameras and there's loads we haven't mentioned - have a look at a few in a shop to get a feel for handling and size.
