i got a marantz 4400 from richersounds ( with some mordaunt shorts). i think its about £180 online!

    bargain!

got dts discrete, DPII, DD ex etc and 6.1 inputs for dvd-audio etc, and pre-outs for further upgrading.

looks damn sexy in silver too. only got 80 watt pc tho! JUST about enuff for me. i believe marantz amps and mordaunt short speakers sound good paired together. believe me, they do!!

The Sony DB790 was voted the best out of the amps in this group by Home Cinema (check out the site for a review that rounds up just about all the amps you've mentioned) and can be had for £208 from Hifibitz. Just recieved delivery of mine today which i will be pairing up with Tannoy FX5.1 speakers when they arrive (either later today or tomorrow). Will let you know how well it performs.

The Yamaha's are newer models and have more power than the Marantz (which is due to be replaced soon) and Dolby PL2x. The yamaha's should out perform the marantz in all things except stereo as Marantz are very musical recievers.

The Pioneer 814 can be had for a bargain too, supposed to be a VERY good amp, and can be set up as a 7.1 system I believe.

    Dfour,
    i think u are wrong here,read this reivew http://www.homecinemachoice.com/cgi-bin/displayreview.php?reviewid=4510
& u will see that HCCO says the 750 is the best(in stereo) of 3 recivers including Marantz & this is due to the new Yamaha feature "Pure Direct Mode".

also the RXV650 have Pure Direct mode as the flagship Z9 & the upcoming RXV1500 & 2500.

this is why amps need to be demo'd first, by "more musical" refers to marantz having a similar character to their stereo amplifiers. Yamaha although much better in two channel than previous years are still behind on this musicality, however the yamaha's are to my opinion much better all-round amps.
The Pure direct mode is still reliant on the quality and character of the amplifiers! So there is still a vast difference between the dspax750 and the z9 etc..

I am both right and wrong here. If we where talking about the 650 or higher then I would be wrong but we where talking about the 450/550.
