As much as i like the Guy Ritchies ones for me it has to be the Long Good Friday, if only for the speach to the Americans in the hotel, and the end scene, pure class.

I think most British gangster movies are completely overrated and to be honest I can't really think of one quality British gangster movie.

Generally I think British Cinema is extremely poor but my view has changed slightly in recent years with the excellent 28 days later and dog soldiers showing that we can make quality entertainment. It's just a shame that most British films tend to be the same old cockney gangster bull*h*t. Boring!

if you can get a copy i would recommend the criterion edition

    you'll love the film :D

i used to know paul moriarty who played razors - we drank in the same pub - he is very much like the character minus the violence and told a few good stories about the other films in which he starred (can't remember which bond movie??)

why the criterion one? From the description on rewind, it looks crap! Non anamorphic, mono sound and only two trailers for extras.

compared to the UK Anchor Bay one - anamorphic, DD 5.1/DD 2.0, commentary, interview, bios, film notes, photo gallery, slang notes, booklet

imo the criterion seems to capture the atmosphere better :D

purely a personal viewpoint and not based on any technical facts!

I love the inherently bad language of Sexy Beast so that gets my vote.

Got to disagree about 28 Days Later, thought that that was one of the worst films I've seen in years.

Snatch and Lock, Stock are both class.
Not seen any of the others except a bit of The Ladykillers though, which is a pretty poor effort on my behalf :¬/

I also really like 28 Days Later.

Snatch and Lock Stock are hilarious parodies, the latter edging the title of best British Gangster film parody in my view.
Best of the really gritty ones imho Get carter and The long good Friday, again the latter edging it in my view due to the better acting, ergo vote went to 'Long good Friday'

The classicist in me wants to say The Ladykillers but for sheer enjoyment I have to say Sexy Beast.

    Love it to bits.
