    Hi All,

I need some advice regarding my first step into Home Cinema surround sound please. I would like an AV amp/speaker set that's very good with music, as I will using it to play my CDs (it will be replacing my Pioneer Midi Hi-Fi system). I also want to use it for DVD-Audio discs, and SACD in the near future (I will be buying a SACD player at a later date), as well as DVD movies. The DVD player I have got is a Panasonic DVD-F65. So at the moment I need advice on which of the following AV amps that I am looking at are the best for music/movies, I have a budget of up to £500 for the amp:

    Pioneer VSXC501
    Yamaha HTR5630RDS
    Yamaha RXV640
    Marantz SR 4400
Marantz SR 5400 (or possibly 7400)

I liked the look of the Pioneer in the shop because it was so slimline, but I am unsure whether it can handle music adequately, because I have heard some AV Amps are lacking in that department. I would also be keen to hear other suggestions.

Speakers - I would like a 5.1 setup, preferably not very large as space is an issue. As I've mentioned above, I would really like them to be very good for listening to CDs in surround sound. My budget for these would be up to £400 - I would like to hear your suggestions please.

    Many thanks in advance,
    Sally

    Hi Sally,

I've just got started on the AV side of things myself, after only having 2ch systems previously.
I listen to 60-40 music/movies so good stereo performance was at the top of my list too.

From reading around the Denon Recievers seemed to be a good bet for stereo use, and this has been borne out by my purchase..

I spent some time ringing around, and managed to get a Denon AVR3803 for £540.. (this was a £900 amp when it was the current model)

This was only a month or so ago, so you may still be able to find one, you'd be well pleased with the performance if you did.

Alternatively, the model below (2804 current, 2803 previously) is about the £500 mark, if you can still find a 2803 it would probably cost you under £400?

I'd definitely say have a listen to the Denon recievers, I compared mine to various models at the same price band and the Denon sounded noticeably better with music..

Marantz are also very good (for an av amp) with music. There are plenty of Marantz owners on here so you should get an opinion off one soon. The 5400 OSE is the best (cheaper) amps for stereo.

The Yamaha rxv650 and AX750 are reputed to also be good in stereo.

You also can't count out Harman/Kardon.

Alos the fabulous and small Mordaunt Short Premiere plus system (the plus has the superb 309 subwoofer and is seriously worth the extra  )

    Hi,

Thanks to all of you for your replies. I'm now leaning towards the Marantz 7400 amp, or possibly the NAD 753 or maybe one of the Denons (the only downside to these amps seems to be that they are quite expensive ie the 3805, and some people say they are a bit complicated). I hope to audition all three very soon.

I'm also now looking at the Mordaunt Short Premiere Plus speakers as these seem suited to both Hi-fi and Home Cinema. I would be grateful if anyone has any comments about these, or any more comments about the musical performance of the amps mentioned.

    Many thanks,
    Sally
