I had to switch over from PC-Cillin 2003 to Norton Antivirus 2003 Pro, my PC seems alot slower now..

Which antivirus s/w checks HTTP & POP3 incoming emails, has regular updates, and doesn't hog the system?

    Thanks

I run norton 2001 on a 900hz machine. Seen and played with others like Mccaffe/PC-Cillin on other poeples machines.

Think you should stick with norton

I use pc-cillian2003 and do not suffer any slow down that's noticable. Updates seem to be available every other day and I've never had a virus scare since using it. I've tried norton and mccaffe in the past and didn't seem to get on with them.
I used avg antivirus for a year or so which is free to download here:-

I thought it was gr8 and only changed because I built a new system which had pc-cillian as part of the software that came with my mobo.

A very good and free AntiVirus proggie with regular (automatic) signature updates is Avast! Very light on system resources and has saved me a couple of times from infected Emails.

I recommend giving this a go before paying out for a virus checker.

    Nathan,

Why the swap from PC-Cillin? I've been using PC-Cillin since version PC-Cillin 98 through to 2000 and now 2003. It's one of the best anti-virus software's I've ever used (I've extensive experience with Norton via work). Very good if you keep up-to-date with your virus pattern files.

PC-Cillin can check for deviant ActiveX controls and Java applets and monitor POP3 mail for viruses without taking too much CPU, on my AMD K6III-450mhz system (which is currently my main system).

I think you may have Norton doing real-time scans of every file that is loaded and executed, this can slow your machine down considerably. It would be better to turn off real time scanning and schedule a daily (or nightly scan) on executables/partition tables and a fuller weekly scan on all files.

    HTH

Panda Antivirus Titanium is a superb little program that has daily updates on offer (with tiny downloads) and is very resource efficient. Check it out ;)
