With todays technology, you'd think that remastering a soundtrack would be pretty simple. So why do the DVD authoring houses biff it up? I watched Robocop last night - apparantly, remastered into Dolby Digital 5.1. It sounded terrible...the score sounded OK but the sound effects were dismal.
On the other side of the coin, Superman the movie sounds as though it was made yesterday, putting some modern soundtracks to shame.
Other remasterd tracks that have been a bit of a let down are Back to the future 1 & 2, whereas 3 sounded fine - and The Terminator...
So why can they make a film like Superman, made nearly 30 years ago, sound so good, while something like BTTF, made 20 years ago, lacks any dynamics whatsoever...

    Costs?

Practically ALL films 'remixed with 5.1' sound pretty dull apart from the ones you mention. They'd be better off just leaving the original soundtrack as it is, even if it's mono!

Jaws is another VERY POOR mix.

Agreed. The dts mix of Jaws is even worse...

Army Bloke dons flame proof suit, exits stage left and awaits outrage from massive dts fanboy posse of the avforums...:boring:

Superman was originally mixed in 6 channel for its 70mm cinema showings and like Apocalyspe Now it was 6 channel with split stereo surrounds, it was remixed again for dvd.

Jaws DTS region 1 which i have sounds pretty good considering it was just mono theyve done as good a remix as possible and the music is actually so much better in the remixed version.

RoboCop came out on dvd with its new 5.1 mix and anamorphic pic and was getting all these 5 points outta 5 reviews, did the studio pay the reviewers or are they blind and deaf. ?

RoboCop has a terrible remix and one of the worst ive heard, the bass is far too boomy and i think even on its original cinema showing the sound was nothing special, the whole film soundtrack needs a complete overhaul and remix.

One of the best remix tracks iv'e heard is "The Mission" i had worried that they would'nt do the soundtrack justice but it sounds great. Not sure if the "Untouchables" is a remix but for a 5.1 mix is sounds terrible.
