Hi, first post so be gentle......

I've bought a set of Mission FS2AV's from Empire, seemed the best option due to space/layout restrictions.

What would be the 'best' amp for these, using the following criteria :

    1. Must be DD/DTS and DPL II
    2. Movie/TV performance is paramount
    3. Music performance is not important, don't listen to that much music (1 - 2 hours a week)
    4. Multi device remote would be a bonus

I've done a few searches but most tend to put music performance over movie performance, as I've said, not a feature I'm interested in.

    Shortlist

    Marantz SR4200 - £240
    Denon 1602 - £260
    Sony 585 ?
    Yamaha 620 ?

    Thanks

I have a Yamaha DSP620 and while it is great for DD/DTS, it doesn't do DP II. Not so hot with stereo either. Denon or Marantz are better.

I'd also vote for the Denon 1602... although since you say £200-300, you can also just get the 1802 for £299.

I'd recommend you get at least 70W per channel, and a true rating... some of the ratings given by the amps arent necessarily accurate.. certainly Sony and possibly Marantz by others' posts here.

the low end yamahas are only 65W so maybe drop these off the list... demo first though if possible.

looking at homecinemaheaven & unbeatable, they also list these which could be worth a look...

    Panasonic SA-HE70 - 5.1 Receiver, 80wpc x 5, Pro Logic 2 £199.99

    Sony 685 - 5.1 Receiver, 100W x 5, Prologic 2, £229

    Pioneer VSXD711S - 5.1 Receiver, 100wpc x 5, Pro Logic II £249.99

havent seen any of these... all are newish models, not even sure the Sony is really out.
the pioneer even has a virtual rear centre according to the specs which is a plus.

    try and get some demos.

I went into RICHER SOUNDS yesterday with the intention of getting a Denon 1602, and the guy in there advised me not to because they have a fault on the THX that messes up the sound quality.

What do you guys think about that?

    what do we think?

not much really. what you said means precisely nothing.

(the 1602 isnt a THX amp for starters).

there are no faults with 1602/1802 AFAIK currently.

some makes (Marantz & Denon included) did have a fault with an oem chip in some models that didnt detect EX signals properly but thats 6 months+ ago.

do tell... did the Richer advisor steer you to something else they had?

    Thanks for the input.

I spoke to one of the salesmen at HiFi Corner in Edinburgh today, trying to get a feel for which amp to go for. He rcommended the 1802, albeit it was more expensive than other online operations!

When I mentioned the FS2's he said he'd heard the FS1 in the flesh and it was far better quality and worth waiting for. I have a few days before the distance selling regs run out, I'll get a few more opinions before I send the FS2's back.

I'd take a demo of these but they don't come in until mid August.

    Anyone else actually demo'd these?

    the FS-1?

someone got a quick demo of a pre-release here,
but no public demos of the finished ones yet AFAIK.

from the original specs, they were meant to be cut down
versions though, not a competitor to the FS2... hence the name...,
    and not FS-3 or similar.

plus price is an unknown currently... will they be more or less expensive than £400? maybe.

Right he obviously has his wires crossed somewhere.

Oh he didn't steer me anywhere else, I came away without anything.

    BTW the 1602 is being sold here for £220;

not unusual for Richer Sounds. they rarely have Denons in, even though they are advertised,
then try to push another model to you...

they are a cheap boxshifter outfit at the end of the day...

always wondered about the go2camcorder site.. but never actually ordered from them... good prices though.

BTW, what does xyznicko2577 mean? some obscure reference?

hard to tell where the FS-1 is being placed comparing the specs.

reading between the lines, I'd say they are pretty similar to the FS2s.

only real diffs I can see:-
the sub is only 100W instead of 150W...(theoretically worse?)
and slightly lower crossover on the satellites (should improve the sound).

the satellites are the same dimensions as the FS2s but half the width.

bar that, doesn't look much difference.

could just be a redesign with a new look?

Demo'd the 1802 and 4200 on Saturday at HiFi Corner.

Plumped for the 4200, I couldn't tell the difference.

RS wouldn't price match the £239.99 from Avland so they lost a sale, was going to buy my interconnects and extended warranty too. Went home and put my order in over the net, should arrive tomorrow.

Thanks for the replys and help.........no doubt I'll post again with help on placement/setup.
