Best 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays of 2019 & Comments

Thanks cas. I think I buy iron man 😁

Thanks for this list, Cas. Of these, watched Apocalypse Now, John Wick 3, I have Alien, and Iron Man is on the purchase list
John Wick 3 also on the purchase list.

Cas, many thanks for this list - you’ve convinced me to buy Angel Heart in its 15th format I think! Thanks also for the refuting of the ‘it’s only 2K so no good’ argument.

One question - does Iron Man really not suffer from the smoothing?

Good to see I've watched a lot of these. Still got Wizard of Oz and Apocalypse Now on my pile of shame though. Need to get them watched.

All great films...but if based on 4K picture quality, I'm sorry, but Iron Man belongs nowhere near any Top 10 list.

Thanks, Cas.

Having seen Apocalypse Now, Alien and Angel Heart, I can only agree with their inclusion on the list.
Not sure that I'd have given the top spot to Apocalypse Now though, not on terms of PQ alone, anyway. Certain scenes have elevated blacks, at least with the base HDR10 layer. FZ800 here, so cannot comment on DV.
The transfers of Alien and Angel Heart are better in this regard.

Got The Shining and Wizard of Oz but haven't seen those yet.

I know it's not out yet in Europe but Ad Astra is another excellent 4k UHD presentation.

Re. Iron Man: I think this is a new transfer released in 2019? Haven't seen it, but the original 4k release made my eyes hurt :)

Thanks for the list Cas,some good titles their,Apocalypse Now i agree has to be number one,Great p/q,but the main thing for me was,all cuts of the movie, some great extras, has to make it Number one :)

The Shinning, very good, but let down by only the one cut, more effort should have gone into it :(

On my list as well

Glory
Rambo US

:)

Says a lot about the quality of films this year that virtually the entire top 10 is made up of older re-releases.

Personally I would have put avengers end game in there as well.

Thanks for the list though Cas, hope you had a great Christmas.

As the list doesn’t specifically mention films, I’m surprised there is no room for Seven Worlds, One Planet.

Not purchased to Many UHD discs this year , a new display and spinner though has given me a taste once again . So cheers @Casimir Harlow As I will treat myself to Alien , Iron Man , Casino and Angel Heart . Not watched the latter since VHS days so will be like watching a new film.

Cas says:
Although some of the latest releases provide hard-to-argue-with demo material, there's something quite special about a native 4K Dolby Vision rendition of a classic masterpiece
If this was about the actual best discs for p/q and audio then the list would look a lot different.

Indeed. Plus the tape won't wear out during the Lisa Bonet 'scene'...

I know I've said it before , many times but a film such as Alien crud out for a 3d object based mix . It has such a great soundstage that would be greatly enhanced with an Atmos or DTS X mix. The landing on LV426 inside the cockpit for example has always been a favourite on the sound front . Although I have to admit , Iron Man should sound suitably fantastic in Atmos .

Completely disagree with this. Angel Heart should be no where near this list. It’s a SDR picture, pretending to be HDR. No Lion King, no Seven Worlds, One Planet, No Joker?!

Joker’s not released yet I don’t think. I’ve heard very good stuff about Angel Heart’s UHD from various sites

I agree, but Fox haven’t done this too much with their library titles. Same goes for Predator, Die Hard and Prometheus - but DTS X Neutral / Dolby Surround do a very good job of approximating DTS X / Atmos

Cheers Cas :)

The ones that blew me away this year were Alien and The Shining... couldn't believe how good they look.

Alien does indeed look great, watched it in HDR10+.
Was going to hold out on The Shining until Dr. Sleep will be released on disc, but now I might just give it a go tonight, again in HDR10+...

I'm sorry, but there is no way Iron Man belongs on this list. And for 2019. left off the list which is a HUGE mistake is Seven Worlds, One Planet. Also left off the list is Black Hawk Down. This means John Wick Chapter 3 has to go. And to top it off, Bohemian Rhapsody has to be on the list. I'm dropping Angel Heart given it's mixed reviews on the picture quality.

If you want to add to the list, that's fine. But Iron Man, Angel Heart, and John Wick Chapter 3 still have to go.

While Avengers: Endgame is an excellent movie, the PQ in UHD is not good enough to make the list.

Really annoyed I missed Don't look now on release as it’s twice the price now on eBay.
I’ve never seen it, but this format sounds like the one to finally see it on.
Hopefully will get a cheaper version released .. may have to go digital as it’s nearly 1/4 of the price (come on suppliers, we are trying to keep this format alive!)
Some great titles Cas, we watched The Shining last night and it looked stunning.
Apoc is a classic and bar a few noisy grain scenes in the sky, I thought it was a gorgeous transfer.
With Jaws having a 2019 cinema release I really hope to be reading it on your 2020 best of UHD list!!

Hold tight, looks like Don't Look Now is getting a re-release (standard 4K edition) in January.
