    Hi all

After looking around I am thinking this is probably the best 49” TV I can probably get to replace an aging Plasma.

    Sony KD49XF9005

Sony Bravia KD49XF9005 LED HDR 4K Ultra HD Smart Android TV, 49" with Freeview HD & Youview, Black at John Lewis & Partners

    Key requirements:

I mostly have HD content so needs to be able to upscale as well as can be expected.
Needs to come in under 110cm in width to fit in the space I have.
Need to able to run all the usual smart tv apps - Netflix, Amazon, Plex
    Reasonable Sound

Can I do better for the money ?

Max I want to pay is 1k

    Cheers

For 49" the XF90 is the bare minimum for HDR, then the XF85.

All the 50" models won't offer great HDR performance, 55" is the sweet spot these days.

It all comes down to what content you are using at the end of the day.

I have read all that thanks... I haven’t the space for anything bigger than a 49” sadly

XF90 should be around £800-850. It’s overpriced currently

Most are IPS or PLS/ADS at this size apart from the XF85 and XF90, 50" models are all VA.

If you wait until Spring you can bag the XF90 for the price that Zep has already mentioned, next month the 2019 models will be announced and stock will arrive instore around March onwards depending on the retailer which will then see the 2018 models slowly decreased until we get to clearance pricing around April or May depending on territory.

Excellent set, but when connecting to the internet suggest a fixed cable not wi-fi. Android is slow so to restrict it even more with wireless would not be good.

You can't beat a wired connection, wireless is really for convenience, as for automatic firmware updates I'd recommend USB as it's so much faster than downloading.

I thought it was VA not IPS :(

Sounds like I might be best waiting until next year!

XF90 is va. I’d bide your time and wait for further price drops.

Go for the cheaper XF85xx / XF87xx series if HDR is not a concern. You still get very good upscaling and you won't be paying extra for the increased HDR performance.

It seems, at least from you have written so far you have little need for an UHD model, let alone HDR. The XF90xx may be a large overkill.

Good sound? I'm afraid you can forget about that with most if not all TVs now. You aren't going to find a 49" TV with good sound nowadays. Try a soundbar!

The only other contender is a Samsung QLED. I believe that you can get the Q6 in a 49" size for under a grand.

It is, but the Samsung's tend to be overpriced for what they are. They also don't have 120hz panels at this size like the Sony's.

For some reason Samsung gimped all their 49" panels with 60hz.

Hadn't realised the 49" wasn't 100Hz (the old KS series were). The Panasonic FX750 is 100Hz and has the HCX processor.

2017 Q7 was 100hz at 49”. Odd decision by Samsung.

    Panasonic is ips now.

Sadly Panasonic went with IPS this year, bad if you want better contrast and blacks. The EX750 from last year was a better TV in my opinion. Philips 8 series (no UK availability for some reason) is also 120hz but also IPS.

Even LG have put 60hz panels on their SK8000/SK8100 series compared to last years SJ8000/SJ8100 at 49 inches. Their 49" SK8500 still has a 120hz panel though I think...but like Panasonic, IPS.

At sub 49" its even worse with only Sony having a 120hz panel on the XF85/XF87 series at that size and again its IPS.

Well its just a reality that the majority of content out there is HD and there are hardly any FHD models too choose from these days. If you need to upgrade it looks like your only real choice is UHD or don't bother upgrading. My TV needs replacing as its not working properly anymore - but I could live with it for a while longer if it make sense too.

I have a Blu-Ray player, Netflix UHD and will slowly upgrade everything I have to UHD. Will just take time I suppose.

Why wouldn't I want to pay extra for HDR ? I want the TV to last me a good while and I would rather have HDR than not have it ? Or am I missing something ?

Is there any good FHD TVs still knocking around that are about 49 inch. Less than 110 cm width

Given what you have and that you plan on upgrading, I don’t think the XF90 is overkill. Just wait a bit as it’ll drop in price.

You have a notional budget of £1k - get tv for c£800 and add a soundbar. Then later add a 4K player.

Because the other TV supports HDR still and costs a lot less. By the time you use HDR a lot if you pay more for the higher end model it will be out of date in one way or another anyway.

I've mentioned it before previously in different threads, don't think about the future, think about what you will use now. Its up to you if you want to spend the money on the XF90 but the XF85 at 49" is probably going to be more than good enough for your needs, saving money over the small amounts of HDR content you use.

Obviously if you planned on utilising more HDR content, that may be different.
