Hi All,

My lads birthday is coming up and he has asked for a new monitor / TV and i really havent a clue what im looking for lol.

Size wise it should be 28" or smaller and though being able to receive digital tv would be good im pretty sure he can do that via his computer anyway ? He plays stuff like GTA and overwatch, first person shooters etc

So what would be worth buying new or second hand or what should i be looking for in terms of spec / makes ? I guess just going down to PC world and buying a 28" HD tv would probably not be the best idea but like i say i havent a clue lol

Any help much appreciated

Dave

You can get computer monitors with built in speakers so along with a USB TV tuner and some TV software you can get live TV on the computer.

For example this unit is 27" 1080p, has built in speakers, dual HDMI inputs (if PC doesn't have HDMI output a simple Displayport to HDMI cable will work), it has a low response time ideal for games and it has an IPS type panel which means it has good image quality (in monitors own menu settings set display mode to sRGB).

For live TV get a DVB-T2 USB tuner and it will probably come with some TV software but I would recommend DVBlink, there is a help guide at the bottom of the page which will tell you what you need. DVBlink can be used with other media center software as well like Emby and Kodi.

Getting an actual TV, well at 28" or thereabouts it's going to be a lot of low end budget options, I think your better off sticking with computer display if thats it's primary purpose as some TV's do not work well as computer displays.

it has an IPS type panel which means it has good image quality

All an IPS panel means is that it loses less contrast when viewed from a greater angle. The image quality is down to the quality of the panel, not it's type.

If you go and ask in the TV forum then they'll tell you the IPS is low quality, because it's the most common choice for budget TVs.

You don't say whether he's gaming on PC or console but If it's PC then the biggest technology we've seen in a while is something called variable refresh rate. The most common version is freesync and I wouldn't buy a screen without it as it's available in every budget.

Ideally you want something with Freesync LFC support which works better but models with that such as AOC's G2460PF tend to start at just over £200 and I don't know how much you're contemplating on spending.

Consoles don't support it, but there are rumours that the new Xbox will do.

Twas just a generalization for his benefit, I know the various display panel types but if he went looking for a video game display then a shop or even online is most likely going to direct him towards those in general not very good in my opinion TN film gamer monitors.

IPS is not an absolute guarantee of quality but in PC displays it tends to appear in better than average products, plus it's handy for watching TV at an angle.

Overwatch/GTA5 arent exactly hyper twitch games like Counterstrike that appeal to those ultra low latency gamer monitors but maybe I miss judged and thats what his son is after.

this something that he has picked out as he says some of his friends have it - any good ? Is it good for the money or should i pay a bit more for something better ?

It's a popular choice, although personally I'd probably look at the larger models such as the G2460VQ6 as they allow you to have the monitor a bit further back which gives you more desk space in front. The price gaps do jump up and down though and it seems to be fairly large right now unfortunately.

Variable refresh rate is about the smoothness of the picture rather than it's responsiveness. Much like response time it's mainly to do with the motion aspect of image quality than any sort of twitch game 0.001% advantage.
